Cyberpunk 2077 Hacking: How it’s done

It wouldn’t be a true Cyberpunk Dystopia without creative hackers. Night City offers plenty of opportunities for ambitious Netrunners to influence the environment through various quickhacks.

  • Receive Money and Components: Use the quickhack “Data Mining” to grab Eurodollars (also called EDs or Eddies), as well as item components at Access Points that are marked with a red symbol. There are up to three versions of the available hacks, which differ in difficulty and reward – assuming you manage to hack into the system using the Breach Protocol.
  • Hacking and damaging enemies: Using the appropriate quickhacks, you can disrupt your opponents’ cyberware, jam their weapons, give them damage-over-time effects, increase their vulnerability to damage, or even drive them into suicide. Depending on the capacity of your cyberdeck and the level of the corresponding Perk Trees, there is a variety of very useful options for every possible combat situation. This is particularly useful when dealing with Cyberpsychos (Guide).
  • Use security systems: You can take over the surveillance cameras connected to hostile networks, with which you can observe enemy positions. With the quickhack “Turret Tamer” you can turn turrets into your allies and make them attack your enemies. Alternatively, you can disable the technical equipment of your opponents, making it useless against V.
  • Distracting enemies: Depending on the device to which you apply the corresponding Distract quickhack, the effect will vary: TVs turn on and flicker, backlights activate, parts of larger machines explode, and more – enough to lure enemies in and keep them in place for a certain amount of time, allowing you to take them out.

Basic terms in Hacking

V requires a cyberdeck in order to perform a hack – good thing you already have one equipped in V’s cyberware at the start of the game – albeit with rather mediocre values. Each cyberdeck requires an Operating System that has a Buffer value, a certain amount of quickhack slots, and a native amount of RAM.

You can get better cyberdecks with higher stats from Night City’s Ripperdocs in return for Eurodollars. For the best ones, you’ll not only have to pay mid-five-figure Eddie amounts, but you’ll also have to meet certain Streed Cred requirements. Open your inventory and select the “Cyberware” menu to get to the cyberware overview. Move your cursor to the currently equipped cyberdeck in the “Operating System” section, and take a look at the following values.:

  • Buffer Size: The Buffer Size determines how many numerical values you can load into the Cyberdeck during a Breach protocol. The larger the buffer, the longer the possible number sequences, resulting in a greater number of hacks you can perform simultaneously. You will find a step-by-step guide through the Breach Protocol Hack in the next section of this guide.
  • Quickhack Slots: The amount of quickhack slots determines how many different quickhacks you have at your disposal at once. In theory, the more quickhack slots you have, the more quickhacks you can choose from – as long as you have enough quickhack mods equipped. You can find new Quickhack mods at vendors, collect them as loot from enemies, or craft them yourself if you have enough components and Crafting Specs. Once you have performed a quickhack, it cannot be used again until the cooldown has expired.
  • RAM: Each executed quickhack consumes a number of memory points, depending on the type and strength of the quickhack. The more maximum RAM your cyberdeck holds, the more quickhacks you can perform simultaneously. Once a quickhack has been executed, the amount of memory required for it is used up and has to be recharged again. You increase the regeneration rate and amount of base RAM through Hacking Perks, Skill Progression Rewards, and Special Cyberware. You can see your total RAM in the character overview under “Stats” when you click on the “Health” bar.

Initiating & Mastering the Breach Protocol Hacking Minigame

Breach Protocol is the most affordable hack you can use to get a RAM bonus while you’re in enemy networks (devices and people) or to extract money and components from the network. Link yourself directly into a terminal or hack a device or an enemy to start the Breach Protocol.

This mini-game always consists of the same elements: On the left side of the screen you’ ll find the code matrix with several rows consisting of numbers and letters, as well as a timer (that is inactive at the beginning). On the right side of the screen you can see the available hacks and their matching number combinations. At the top of the screen you can see the free buffer slots of your Operating System.

Your job in the Breach Protocol minigame is to find the combinations of numbers and letters that match the available hacks in the code matrix on the left and activate them in the smartest order. It works like this:

  • The timer starts only when you click on the first code in the first line. The code will be uploaded into your buffer. Before you do this, you should take your time to plan possible “routes” through the code matrix. This is important if you want to activate more than one hack but only have a limited Buffer available.
  • The minigame will always start in the top row (horizontal) of the code matrix that is highlighted in light gray. Look for hacks in the hack overview on the right side, which have their first code in the top row. Which code you choose in the top row determines the vertical column for the selection that follows.
  • You can select the next code from the column highlighted in light yellow (vertical). This basic procedure is repeated each time: a horizontal line is followed by a vertical line, then another horizontal line, and so forth.
  • Selected and clicked codes are highlighted in the matrix within empty square brackets. The next row, which was previously displayed in light yellow, is now highlighted in gray to indicate that it is active – you can now click on the next code. The next possible horizontal row will appear in light yellow when you move the cursor over the individual codes.
  • Once you have uploaded all codes for a sequence into the buffer one by one, the hack is successful and is highlighted in green. Hacks whose code sequences do not match your selection, and are therefore no longer usable, are highlighted in red and marked as failed.

With a buffer consisting of 4 slots you can only load one hack from the list – choose the most profitable one!

Executing multiple Breach Protocol Hacks at once

If you want to execute several hacks at the same time, you have to plan your “path” through the code matrix in such a way, that you activate all necessary codes one after another. If the Buffer of your cyberdeck is large enough, you can try to connect all available hacks in a row. However, this usually requires a Buffer Size of at least 5.

The last part of a code sequence can also serve as the first part of the next sequence. This saves you a buffer space in case of two compatible hacks. This is really helpful at the beginning of the game, when you can’t afford a powerful cyberdeck yet.

Our sample image shows you a particularly favorable sequence constellation: Both “Data Mining_V1” and “Data Mining_V2” have the same codes in their sequence. Therefore, if you choose “Data Mining_V2”, “Data Mining_V1” will automatically be executed at the same time – what else can you ask for?

In “Data Mining”, “connecting” all available hacks in a row earns you a decent profit even in the standard version. If you improve this quickhack through Hacking Perks, you’ll get a lot more out of it. More tips on how to earn money in Cyberpunk 2077 can be found in our extra guide.

The “Data Breach Protocol” fails when …

Ad
Ad
  • you run out of time. Pay attention to the timer and plan appropriate routes through the code matrix before you start. You have unlimited time for planning!
  • you click on a non-matching code while you lack a large enough Buffer
  • Your buffer is not long enough for additional code parts, and all slots are already filled with codes.

Performing hacks on Enemies and Devices

Start by scanning the environment and targeting an enemy or device to see what hacks are available to choose from, and how much RAM each hack costs. The more RAM is available cumulatively through cyberdeck, Perks, and equipment, the more and more frequent options will be available when influencing the environment.

When hacking a network that connects multiple enemies, it is worthwhile to use the Quickhack Breach Protocol to unlock lower RAM costs for follow-up hacks. Ultimate quickhacks like “Cyberpsychosis”, “Suicide” or “Detonate Grenade” are very memory-intensive, but they can take out enemies instantly.

Decide in accordance with the situation whether you want to use a lot of smaller hacks, or a few powerful ones, in order to avoid wasting all your possibilities too early. Alternatively, for hacks like “Cripple Movement”, “Cyberware Malfunction” and “Weapon Glitch”, you can use the rare quickhack variant – this will cause the hack to jump to enemies within a radius of eight meters. “Contagion” already comes with this effect in the uncommon variant, and hits two additional enemies.

Making good use of Surveillance Cameras

Security technology is used to protect most (mission) areas in Cyberpunk 2077: Gun turrets, booby traps and drones are deployed to keep intruders away, and surveillance cameras quickly reveal the presence of unauthorized people on the site.

However, cameras are also a blessing in disguise for attackers and yield many advantages – even for inexperienced netrunners. The option “Camera Control” pops up in the list of possible quickhacks after a scan of a surveillance camera, and you get full access to this camera as well as all other surveillance cameras in the network after completing the hack.

Using those hijacked cameras, you’ll clear up a mission area while relaxing behind some cover. Pivot the active camera to get a general overview of the area.

You can switch between the connected surveillance cameras if there are several camera icons at the bottom left of the screen (key assignment at the right edge of the screen) and use them to peek into rooms that you haven’t reached yet.

One area, four eyes: Use the surveillance cameras to spot enemies and opportunities. © S4G / CD Project Red

The surveillance camera allows you to scan and mark enemies as if you were on site. These markers remain, so you know where your enemies are even before entering a room.

You can also apply offensive quickhacks: As soon as the first damage effects kick in, the enemies within the area will become startled and start running around searching for you. However, if you are well-hidden and have accessed the camera system from a distance, nobody will spot you (usually).

Ad

You can also use quickhacks when scanning enemies or gadgets via a surveillance camera. © S4G / CD Project Red

Netrunners with a larger cyberdeck memory and suitable quickhacks can take out all enemies detectable via the surveillance camera network beforehand. The “Contagion” hack that spreads among multiple enemies is especially useful to clean out entire areas in one go.

If you are not specialized in hacking, you can still wreak havoc via surveillance cameras, and prepare your attack by weakening your opponents and disabling their guns. Once reconnaissance is complete, it’s wise to “re-pole” cameras via quickhack. This way, approaching enemies in the camera’s field of view are automatically marked as enemies on the minimap and you won’t be surprised by any reinforcements!

Important Attributes, Perks and Cyberware for Hacking

The most important Attribute for all netrunners in Night City has to be “Intelligence”. Every point you invest in Intelligence expands your cyberdeck RAM by four percent, increases your quickhack damage by half a percent, and increases the duration of quickhacks by one percent. Then, in the Intelligence-related Breach Protocol and Quickhacking perk trees, you’ll be given options for new quickhacks, more RAM, better regeneration, and more.

Ad

You can learn more about Perk trees and Perk Rewards through Skill Progression in our Cyberpunk 2077 Attribute and Skill Guide. There you will also find a complete list of all Perks. This will help you planning your character.

We have chosen particularly useful Perks that are essential for successful Netrunning in this Hacking Guide. You can upgrade some of these perks multiple times.

  • Cyberdeck (Operating System): Check out the Cyberdeck lineup each time a new Ripperdoc appears on your map. If you have enough Eurodollars on your account, buy a more powerful variant. The more RAM Units, the more options you have for Hacking! We recommend saving your money for an epic or even legendary OS, or working straight towards the requirements (mostly Attribute, or perhaps Street Cred Requirements).
  • RAM Upgrade (Frontal Cortex, from 8 Intelligence): Get this upgrade, if your RAM Recovery Rate is not sufficient enough for you.
  • Memory Boost (Frontalcortex, from 7 Intelligence): This cyberware recovers RAM Units after neutralizing an enemy, providing you with a steady influx of RAM Units even in the base version – especially if you frequently kill enemies through the use of hacks.
  • Ex-Disk (Frontal Cortex, from 10 Intelligence): More RAM is never a bad thing – however, all variants are kinda expensive. We recommend upgrading the cyberdeck / operating system first.
  • Tyrosine Injector (Circulatory System, 12 Street Cred): The injector increases the Breach duration by 100 percent. However, this is only worthwhile if you suffer from a chronic time shortage when hacking.

You can buy new quickhacks from the netrunners in various qualities. The numbers at the beginning of the table are important for the list of quickhacks below. The colored numbers in the last row show you which netrunners have which quickhacks and what rarity level they have.

  • If you have a few Eurodollars to spare, it’s always a good idea to buy something of better quality, as it adds another useful effect to the basic one. This is especially worthwhile for hacks that can spread to groups of opponents – after all, you’ll have to deal with them quite often!
  • Attention: Check your inventory and cyberdeck to see what hacks are already available to you before making a purchase. At the moment, the vendor inventory does not mark whether you already own a hack.

Cyberpunk 2077: All Quickhacks and their effects

  • Hint: The effects starting at the level “Rare” are added on top of the always present effects of the level “Uncommon”. Legendary traits, moreover, are often passive, and do not just affect the quickhack they come with. Prices are standard prices, regardless of any discounts. The numbers at the vendors correspond to the list of Netrunner stores above.

Quickhack Activations through Perks

Another way to get new quickhacks is in the “Breach Protocol” Perk Tree, which is part of the “Intelligence” Attribute: depending on how high V’s intelligence value is, you unlock one or more perks using perk points. You can use the corresponding hacks in the game afterwards.

Tip: You can find more information about Cyberpunk 2077 Attributes and Perks in our skill guide.

Crafting Quickhacks

The Perks “Hacker’s Manual” (Intelligence 3), “School of Hard Hacks” (Intelligence 12), “Hacker Overlord” (Intelligence 16), and “Bartmoss’ Legacy” (Intelligence 20) from the “Quickhacking” Perk Tree (see also Cyberpunk 2077 Skill Guide) unlock Crafting Specs for uncommon, rare, and epic quickhacks.

You can get the necessary components through “Datamining” at Access Points, or loot them from enemies or crates. Some quickhacks are available already at the rarity level “Uncommon”, others can only be found in the “Epic” variant.

  • Higher level quickhacks require you to possess the previous level of a quickhack. You can then enhance it with the corresponding upgrade. Exceptions are quickhacks of which there is no “unusual” and/or “rare” variant – using Crafting Specs of these quickhacks you then craft a whole new quickhack.
