In this Hogwarts Legacy mount guide you’ll learn:

  • Which mounts are available in Hogwarts Legacy
  • How to unlock every mount
  • The advantages each mount provides

While you can fast travel via Floo Flames in Hogwarts Legacy, not every region is directly accessible. Instead of walking long distances, you can tame and ride mounts. Here’s where to find them.

Hogwarts Legacy: Which mounts are available?

Although there are a total of 13 magical beasts in Hogwarts Legacy, you can only ride three of them. These mounts allow you to reach remote regions that are hard to access on foot or via Floo Flames. The available mounts are:

  • Thestral
  • Graphorn
  • Hippogriff

Both the Thestral and Hippogriff can fly, making quests significantly easier. This lets you avoid ground-based enemies altogether. The Graphorn can’t fly, but thanks to its massive size it can charge through enemies.

How do I unlock all mounts?

Not all mounts in Hogwarts Legacy are available right away. To unlock the Hippogriff and Graphorn, you’ll need to progress further in the main story. Here’s an overview of the quests, level requirements, and locations for each mount:

MountQuestRequirementLocation
Hippogriff“High Keep” from Natsai OnaiLevel 17 and the spell “Wingardium Leviosa”Southeast of Keenbridge
Graphorn“San Bakar’s Trial” from Prof. FigLevel 24Clagmar Coast

If you purchased the Deluxe Edition with the Dark Arts Pack, you’ll unlock the Thestral mount automatically during a quest. Alternatively, you can capture it in the open world.

Since these mounts can’t be captured easily, make sure you equip the spells “Disillusionment” and “Levioso” beforehand. Use Disillusionment to approach beasts without being detected, but remember they can still sense a faint glow, so sneak up from behind.

With “Levioso” or “Glacius”, you can slow down Thestrals, Graphorns, and Hippogriffs before pulling out your Nab-Sack. This is especially important if the Thestral or Hippogriff tries to fly away. Since catching a Thestral takes longer, only use your Nab-Sack once the beast is settled on the ground.

During the quest “San Bakar’s Trial”, you’ll have to fight a Graphorn before you can claim it as a mount. Just before the battle ends, you’ll be given the choice to subdue the Graphorn peacefully or violently. Choose the peaceful option to unlock it.

Once tamed, you can later capture and even breed more Graphorns on Clagmar Coast. Keep in mind that only one will spawn at a time, and its gender is random.

Hogwarts Legacy: Mount advantages

Even though you can get by without mounts for a while, they offer several advantages. With Thestrals and Hippogriffs, you can reach tall castles or cross mountain ranges with ease. This is especially useful if your next quest is hidden behind a mountain. Instead of walking around it, simply use your mount.

If you have to push through large groups of enemies during a mission, the Graphorn can assist in battle. Thanks to its sheer size, it can charge through and knock enemies down.
