Hogwarts Legacy tips: Which House should I choose?

After just a short time, you will be able to choose your House and join Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin. After a short quiz, the Sorting Hat assigns you to one of the Houses. Just like in the Harry Potter films, the final decision is still yours. Once you have chosen, you cannot change your House later.

In Hogwarts Legacy, each House has a slightly different story element that other Houses do not get. If you choose Hufflepuff, for example, you can visit Azkaban during a quest later on. Even though the visit is short, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin do not get that.

As Gryffindor, you will miss out on that visit, but you can complete more side quests and unlock additional rewards. The Azkaban quest can be completed relatively early. That means you can start a new save and do the quest on another playthrough.

All other differences are so minor that they do not affect gameplay. The only real changes are the color of your robes and the decor of the common rooms. If you prefer green and want a darker style, you should choose Slytherin.

  • Note: Unlike in the Harry Potter films, choosing Slytherin does not let you take an evil path. The dialogues may differ, but you will not become a dark wizard.

Use Floo Flames to travel

Hogwarts is so huge in the game that it is easy to get lost. To get from quest to quest, you can either walk or use Floo Flames. The catch is that you need to activate the points first. To do that, open the map and zoom in on the different areas.

Grey flames show you stations you have not activated yet. Green flames are fast travel points you can already use. Whenever you can, visit the remaining Floo Flames so you can move around more freely.

  • Note: Floo Flames also show up on the mini-map once you are nearby. Even if it looks like the travel point is right next to you, a small arrow on the icon tells you whether you need to go up or down a level.

Hogwarts Legacy tips: Use learned spells for puzzles

You will learn your first spells very early and can use them right away. Spells are not only useful in combat, but also for things like tracking down collectibles. With the revealing spell “Revelio”, you can find hidden Field Guide Pages. With “Levioso”, you can move certain objects and unlock more items.

If you start Ronen’s assignment in the school courtyard, you will have to repair a broken statue. To the left of it, you will find another statue holding something in its hand. Cast the levitation spell “Levioso” to remove the lid of the orb. Inside, you will reveal another Field Guide Page. You will find statues like this all over the school. If a spell can be used, the statues will glow white.

Do not ignore your teachers in Hogwarts Legacy

In Hogwarts Legacy, you should listen to your teachers and complete optional assignments. If you skip them, progressing through the main story can become difficult. By finishing tasks your professors give you, you will unlock additional spells.

Some spells are required to complete main missions. So if Ronen, Professor Fig, Professor Weasley, and the others give you homework, do not ignore it. In the quest menu, you can see which spell you will receive for which completed assignment.

Enjoy the game, you will not miss anything

After just a few hours, you will notice how many side quests Hogwarts Legacy offers. Do not worry, you do not need to complete every quest to move forward. If you want to fully immerse yourself in the story, you can focus on the main story first. All side quests can still be completed later.

Instead of rushing from mission to mission, enjoy the story and the many extras outside of the story.

Wondering why you have not gotten a broom yet, or why you have not seen any beasts so far? You can take the pressure off here too, because these features are only unlocked as you progress through the main story. So you do not need to search for your first broom, just keep completing quests.

Hogwarts Legacy tips: Check your owl post

Students and teachers will regularly send you messages you should not ignore. They give you new quests where you can earn useful items or spells as rewards. Since not every message pops up automatically, open the menu often and check whether you have new mail.

You can change your gear later

At the start of the game, you create your own character. During your first missions and through optional content, you will keep getting gear that differs in stats and appearance. If you like an outfit but you find a better piece of gear, you can switch without losing the look you prefer.

In Hogwarts Legacy, you can change the appearance of all clothing items whenever you want without affecting their attributes. Want to keep your old hat look but use the benefits of a new hat? Equip it, then change the appearance with a single click. Completing quests also unlocks additional cosmetic rewards. To claim them, open the Challenges menu.

Sell items you do not need

Inventory space in Hogwarts Legacy is limited, so use it wisely. Whenever you can, sell your items in Hogsmeade before starting a new quest chain. If you do not, you may not be able to claim new rewards. Equip your strongest gear and sell anything you no longer wear due to weaker stats.

To expand your inventory space, you should also complete Merlin Trials. Their locations are revealed as you progress and are marked with a leaf icon on the map. Since there are many of these trials, you will not miss them.

  • Note: To start a trial, you need Mallowsweet. Place it in the center of the symbol at the pillar to drive away the vines.

Gather resources for potions

To brew potions in Hogwarts Legacy, you need enough materials. You can find them all over the world. You will pick up your first ingredients on the way to Hogsmeade. Instead of just following the objective, also check the roadside. You will find mushrooms, plants, and more.

Customize your spell menu

Depending on the quest, different spells become useful later in the game. Since you can only equip four at a time, you will need to choose. It is a good idea to always carry one Force spell, one Control spell, and one Damage spell. If you start specific missions where you must not be detected, adjust your spells in the menu beforehand. Your Basic Cast is always available and can be used in combat at any time.
