Masters of Albion is a genre mash-up of God Game, strategy, city-building, simulation, and action, developed by 22cans under the direction of Peter Molyneux. Players take on the role of a godlike entity tasked with shaping — or destroying — the world of Albion through construction, control, and defense.

Joining Molyneux on the project are Mark Healey, Russell Shaw, Iain Wright, and Kareem Ettouney — all seasoned developers who previously worked on classics such as Dungeon Keeper, Fable, and Black & White. Masters of Albion draws directly from these legendary games, reimagining their ideas in a modern setting. According to Molyneux, the project represents “the culmination of his life’s work” and aims to bring the God Game genre firmly into the present day.

Release Date: When Does Masters of Albion Launch?

The official release of Masters of Albion is scheduled for April 22, 2026, at 6 p.m. BST (1 p.m. EST / 10 am PST / 7 p.m. CET). The game will initially launch exclusively on PC via Steam. A release on other platforms has not been announced at this time.

Story: What Is Masters of Albion About?

The story is set in a world on the brink of transformation. Albion is undergoing an industrial revolution, but beneath its modern surface, an ancient magical force is stirring. Long forgotten, this magic returns — hungry for power and ready to plunge the land into chaos. As the final line of defense, it’s up to you to save Albion, uncover its past, and shape its future.

Masters of Albion thrives on strong contrasts and central themes. It explores power and responsibility, pits progress against ancient magic, and confronts players with meaningful choices and their consequences. One of the game’s defining elements is the contrast between cozy creativity by day and brutal danger by night.

Gameplay: How Does Masters of Albion Play?

By day, Albion is a place of creativity and progress — but at night, its peaceful façade is threatened by dark creatures. This core concept, “Build by Day, Defend by Night,” defines the entire gameplay experience. You have access to a wide range of tools:

City Building and Management

You design and construct your own settlements, manage the population, and customize every building individually. There are no construction timers — structures appear instantly and can be modified at any time. Houses can be decorated with colors, patterns, and unconventional designs, and hybrid buildings with multiple functions are also possible.

Divine Powers

As a god, you wield extensive control over the world. You can directly manipulate buildings and objects, possess humans, animals, and heroes, and inspire, reward, insult, or punish your followers. You’re also free to unleash the forces of nature — such as lightning or fire — and defeat enemies using boulders, explosive barrels, or classic thrown weapons.

Perspective Switching and Exploration

You can view Albion from a godlike overhead perspective or dive directly into the action by taking control of heroes, dogs, or even chickens. Alongside quests and secrets, you’ll explore underground cave systems and design your own weapons and clothing — including delightfully bizarre fashion choices for your workers.

Fighting the Night

When night falls, Albion turns into a dangerous battlefield. Creatures of darkness attack villages, kill inhabitants, and destroy defensive structures. To survive, you’ll need to build and strategically position defense towers, recruit and deploy heroes effectively, and construct barriers and choke points. You can also lure enemies into prepared kill zones, intervene directly with divine powers, or take control of heroes and fight in real time. Every night puts your strategic thinking — and your ability to adapt — to the test.
