For the first time in the series, Little Nightmares 3 introduces a co-op mode — though with some clear limitations. Here’s everything you need to know about multiplayer, Crossplay, the Friend’s Pass, and how local play works.
Unlike its predecessors, Little Nightmares 3 focuses on cooperative gameplay for two players. You take control of Low and Alone — two new characters, each with unique abilities. Low uses a bow and arrow, while Alone wields a heavy wrench. The two must work closely together to solve puzzles and overcome obstacles. In this guide, we’ll explain everything you need to know about how co-op works in Little Nightmares 3.
Online Co-op, Not Couch Co-op
The co-op mode in Little Nightmares 3 is online-only. It’s a two-player mode without local split-screen. Couch co-op isn’t included, and you can’t switch between single-player and multiplayer mid-game. If you want to play with a friend, both of you need to be online, even if you’re sitting in the same room.
You can’t change co-op partners during an active playthrough. Each co-op campaign must be completed with the same duo. Solo players can start their game at any time, but existing co-op saves can’t be converted to single-player mode.
No Crossplay Between Platforms
One important limitation concerns cross-platform play: Little Nightmares 3 does not support Crossplay. Players on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch can only play with others on the same platform. That means PS4 players can’t join PS5 users, and Xbox One can’t connect with Series X/S.
Friend’s Pass: Play Co-op Without Buying Twice
One of the best features for co-op fans is the Friend’s Pass. If you own Little Nightmares 3, you can invite a friend to join your game for free, as long as you’re both on the same platform. The invited player doesn’t need to buy the game; they can join using the Friend’s Pass.
The Friend’s Pass is available right at launch. Invitations are sent through the in-game menu, and sessions are hosted online. Important: Even with the Friend’s Pass, Crossplay isn’t supported, and invitations only work within the same platform generation.
Communication in Co-op
Communication between Low and Alone is mostly nonverbal. Instead of voice chat, Little Nightmares 3 uses a simple call mechanic — gestures, short shouts, and other minimal cues. There’s no built-in voice chat, so players who want to coordinate more precisely will need to use external apps like Discord.
Save Files and Game Structure
Each co-op session creates a separate save file. You can have up to eight save slots, allowing for parallel playthroughs in solo and co-op modes. Important: You can’t continue an existing co-op save with a new partner or switch it to single-player. To play with someone else, you’ll need to start a new save. All progress is stored on the host’s account.
