The action-adventure Hell is Us ditches traditional character levels and puts all the focus on your gear. To make sure you’re well-prepared, we break down the key systems around weapons, spheres, and upgrades.

In this Hell is Us guide, you’ll learn:

  • Why you should stick to just a few weapons
  • How to level up and enhance your weapons
  • What Lymbic Spheres are and how they work
  • Which weapons you’ll find in each area

Hell is Us: Level weapons, not your character

In Hell is Us, it’s not your character that levels up — it’s your weapons. The more you use a weapon, the stronger it becomes. This affects both damage output and the ability to equip new glyphs. To get the most out of the system, focus on no more than two weapons early on and use them consistently.

Switching too often means no weapon gains enough XP, leaving you underpowered later in the game. Choose two different weapon types — for example, a fast melee weapon and one with greater reach. That way, you’ll stay flexible in combat and better prepared for different enemy types.

What are Lymbic Spheres and Glyphs?

Every weapon in Hell is Us can be fitted with a Lymbic Sphere. The sphere determines which glyphs you can use. There are five types:

  • Ecstasy
  • Grief
  • Rage
  • Terror
  • Neutral

Your choice of sphere is permanent, so think carefully about which effects suit your playstyle. We recommend the red Rage Sphere for a more offensive build. Neutral weapons are the most flexible and a great pick for beginners.

Glyphs give your weapons unique special abilities. Each weapon can hold up to three glyphs, but only after upgrading it to grade 2 at the blacksmith.

  • Important: A weapon can only equip glyphs of its own sphere or neutral glyphs. If you want specific abilities, you’ll need to pick the right sphere in advance.

All weapons in Hell is Us: Where to find them

Throughout the main story, you’ll come across several weapons you can use right away. They appear in the world as small green orbs—just walk up to them to collect.
