In Ghost of Yotei, you’ll eventually face the boss fight against The Kitsune. Here’s everything you need to know to survive the battle.

In Ghost of Yotei, Kitsune appears as either the second or third of the Yotei Six – depending on the order you take. This fight demands a solid understanding of your weapons, quick reflexes, and the smart use of your abilities. To make sure you’re fully prepared, this guide breaks down both phases of the battle against Kitsune in detail.

Preparing for the Fight Against Dojun

Before challenging Kitsune, make sure you have the Kusarigama or at least the Yari in your arsenal. These weapons are crucial for breaking through his defenses effectively.

If you don’t have the Kusarigama yet, visit Master Enomoto in the north of the Teshio Ridge – defeating him grants you the weapon you need.

  • Tip: Depending on the difficulty level, you can also use your Dual Katana. However, expect the fight to take a bit longer.

First Phase: Between Chain, Blade, and Smoke

Kitsune unpredictably switches between two weapon styles:

  • Kusarigama: Long reach, fast slashes, and frequent counters.
  • Katana with shield: Close-range and defensive.

Your goal is to stay flexible and react quickly when he switches styles. With the Yari, you can counter the chain swings of his Kusarigama attacks effectively. Once he pulls out his shield, the Kusarigama helps you gradually destroy it. Alternatively, switch to your Wolf Blade.

Pay close attention to his poisoned kunai. Even though Atsu’s natural resistance reduces the damage, the poison adds up over time. Keep antidotes ready or stay mobile to dodge his throws.

Things get tricky when Kitsune starts using smoke bombs. Zero visibility, attacks from nowhere – this is where your Listen ability (R3) comes in handy. Listen carefully to detect his silhouette in the smoke. When you sense him winding up for an attack, dodge sideways and counter immediately.

If you have flash powder or smoke bombs yourself, use them strategically: they buy you time and open brief attack windows. Lighting your main weapon with the “Flame of the Oni” is especially effective – it even burns through his shield. Once the shield catches fire, it breaks quickly, giving you a clear opportunity for rapid strikes.

Second Phase: The Battle with Oyuki

When Kitsune is nearly defeated, he’ll retreat through a gate behind the spirit lights. Follow him to trigger the second phase. His health bar refills, but this part of the fight is much calmer than the first.

You’ll now fight alongside Oyuki, who supports you throughout this phase. The good news: Kitsune no longer uses smoke bombs or a shield. Your main concern now is his unblockable chain swings, which can deal massive damage. Watch for his attack animation and dodge sideways instead of blocking.

Stay close to Oyuki and take advantage of her distraction to strike from behind. Fire-based attacks or Oni Flame damage are highly effective here. Stay alert, though – he can still land some heavy hits.

Rewards and Conclusion

When Kitsune falls, victory is yours, marking the end of the Kitsune saga on Teshio Ridge. After the cutscenes, you’ll receive two key rewards:

  • The upgraded Onryo Armor
  • The coveted Kitsune Mask

With these in hand, you’re ready to move on to the next region and confront the Oni or the Saito brothers. For a full overview of Ghost of Yotei’s structure and your current story progress, check out our chapter guide.
