Ghost of Yotei: Release and platforms

According to developer Sucker Punch Productions, Ghost of Yotei will be released on October 2, 2025, exclusively for PlayStation 5. This puts the title’s launch almost exactly five years after Ghost of Tsushima.

  • Note: Ghost of Tsushima was released on PC in May 2024 and was also a great success there.

Ghost of Yotei: Story and gameplay details

In Ghost of Yotei you play as the protagonist Atsu, whose family was murdered 16 years ago by the notorious Yotei Six gang. Atsu herself was nailed to a burning ginkgo tree with a blade and left for dead. But she survived and has now returned to her homeland Ezo, present-day Hokkaido, as an avenger.

Atsu’s quest for vengeance begins with a list of six names: the Snake, the Oni, the Kitsune, the Spider, the Dragon, and Lord Saito. One by one, she intends to hunt them down—wielding the same katana that once pinned her to the tree. But her journey becomes more than just a vendetta. According to the developers, Atsu encounters unlikely allies and forges connections that give her life a new purpose.

Gameplay & features: New info from State of Play

The core of Ghost of Yotei is an open world that takes you to Hokkaidō in the early 17th century. As the warrior Atsu, you embark on a personal vendetta against six targets—the so-called “Yōtei Six”—who can be hunted down in any order. Gameplay offers flexible combat options with weapons such as dual katanas, the mighty ōdachi, or the versatile kusarigama.

Later on, ranged weapons such as bows and rifles come into play. Visually, the game can be tailored to your style: in addition to a classic black-and-white cinema-look mode, there are alternative presentation options, including a darker, more brutal mode and a more relaxed variant with a lo-fi soundtrack. The world reacts dynamically to your behavior, offering hidden paths, changing weather, and a dense atmosphere reminiscent of modern open-world RPGs.

Presentation modes: Three visual styles for different experiences

Ghost of Yotei offers three optional presentation modes, each providing a different visual and atmospheric style:

  • Kurosawa Mode
A black-and-white style with film grain and adjusted audio, reminiscent of classic Japanese cinema. The voice-over is in Japanese, including matching lip-sync.
  • Miike Mode
This mode emphasizes a closer camera, enhanced blood effects, and visible dirt. The goal is to provide a more intense depiction of combat and its consequences.
  • Watanabe Mode
An alternative style with a reduced interface and a specially composed lo-fi soundtrack. This mode aims to provide a calmer gameplay experience, especially when exploring the open world.

All three modes can be activated at any time and only affect presentation—the gameplay itself remains unchanged.

Limited PS5 bundles & controllers: Ghost of Yotei for collectors

Alongside the reveal of further Ghost of Yotei details, Sony introduced two exclusive PS5 Slim bundles featuring unique designs and thoughtful details. The so-called Gold Edition incorporates the Japanese kintsugi motif—a craft where broken objects are repaired with gold—adorning both the console and matching DualSense controller with elegant gold accents and a central spirit mask symbol.

The Black Edition draws inspiration from traditional ink painting, showing Mount Yōtei and northern Japan’s landscape in powerful black-and-white contrasts. Both versions include the console, controller, the digital Standard Edition of the game, and exclusive pre-order bonuses such as a special in-game mask and several PSN avatars. Matching faceplates for PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro, as well as individual controllers in the same style, will also be released. The editions were unveiled during the July 10 State of Play, where first gameplay footage was also shown.

  • The PS5 Console – Ghost of Yōtei Black Limited Edition Bundle will be available exclusively at direct.playstation.com*. Both bundles will be available for pre-order starting September 4, 2025.

Ghost of Yōtei Legends DLC arrives in 2026

At Gamescom 2025, the Legends DLC for Ghost of Yōtei was announced. The expansion will release in 2026 and will be available free for all players. It focuses on a cooperative multiplayer mode that differs greatly from the realistic setting of the main game, instead transporting you into a world shaped by the supernatural.

The DLC includes both two-player story missions and four-player survival matches. You’ll be able to choose from four distinct character classes, including the ghostly swordfighter Yuki Onna, the powerful Oni Lord, and the Oni Grenadier specializing in ranged combat. Each class comes with unique abilities and offers different playstyles.

Together, you’ll face demonic versions of the so-called Yōtei Six, who appear as giant forms supported by numerous new enemies. The Legends DLC therefore adds a distinctly more action-driven and fantastical component to the game.

Ghost of Yotei vs. Ghost of Tsushima: What are the differences?

In Ghost of Yotei, you have more freedom than ever before. The open world is more diverse and allows you to decide which path to follow—and which member of the Yotei Six to hunt first. Whether it’s bounties, new skills from weapon masters, or quiet campfires under the open sky: you explore Ezo at your own pace, make choices, and experience a new world. The stories are unrelated, so Ghost of Yotei can also be enjoyed without having played Ghost of Tsushima.

According to developer Sucker Punch, “Ghost of Yotei” matches the scope and playtime of the acclaimed predecessor “Ghost of Tsushima,” but places an even stronger focus on player freedom. While the world is said to be just as large and detailed, the game aims to encourage you more to follow your curiosity rather than simply obey fixed mission markers.
