We’ll tell you where you currently are in the story of Ghost of Yotei and which chapters or bosses still lie ahead.
Ghost of Yotei technically consists of three main chapters, with most of the story unfolding during the first. However, the overall progression is best understood through the so-called Yotei Six – the key bosses you’ll encounter one by one or in a semi-open order. This guide breaks down all chapters and what to expect from each Yotei encounter.
- Note: Each section briefly touches on the boss’s fighting style. If you want to avoid spoilers, read only the chapter titles – they already hint at how close you are to the story’s end.
Prologue: The Snake / Summer Region
The adventure begins in a warm, sun-lit starting area. Here you’ll learn the game’s basics: stealth, parrying, and using essences. The Snake, your first boss, introduces you to status effects. Its attacks follow a simple pattern – block, then strike during its brief recovery windows.
The Oni / Autumn Region
Autumn marks the hunt for the first of the Yotei Six – the Oni. This region is covered in vibrant red foliage and abandoned villages echoing the Oni cult’s influence. The Oni represents brute strength and vengeance, attacking with relentless aggression. Watch for its stomp attack — it leaves a short opening for counter-strikes.
- Tip: You don’t have to start with the Oni – you can choose to pursue Kitsune after defeating the Snake.

The Kitsune / Winter Region
The winter chapter featuring Kitsune takes place in a snowy mountain region. Kitsune, a spirit and shapeshifter, challenges you mainly through puzzles. To reach the boss, you’ll need to align all fox statues correctly throughout the area.
- Tip: You can also start with Kitsune and face the Oni afterward.

The Saito Brothers / Spring
Spring opens the land in two directions. You can either venture into the spider caves to the south or climb to the dragon temple in the north. Both symbolize opposing forces: the Spider represents control, setting traps and webs you’ll have to dodge and cut through, while the Dragon embodies freedom and movement.
Finale: Saito / The Last of the Yotei Six
At the very end, Saito — the final member of the Yotei Six — awaits in an area combining elements and seasons from all previous regions. The battle is multi-phase and tests everything you’ve learned. In each phase, Saito disables one of your essences, forcing you to time attacks and heals carefully.
