Ghost of Yotei takes you back to Japan in October 2025. In this guide, you’ll find all the key details about the release date, preload time, and how much storage you’ll need to free up on your PS5.

Ghost of Yotei release: When does the game launch?

Ghost of Yotei releases on October 2, 2025, exclusively for PlayStation 5. The game is once again developed by Sucker Punch Productions, the studio behind Ghost of Tsushima. However, in this new entry you won’t play as Jin Sakai or a traditional samurai, but as the warrior Atsu.

The story is set in 1603, about 300 years after the events of the previous game. Atsu returns to her homeland of Ezo – modern-day Hokkaido – to take revenge on the Yōtei Six, the gang that brutally murdered her family long ago.

When does the Ghost of Yotei preload start?

To make sure you’re ready for launch, Ghost of Yotei offers a preload option. Preload began on September 25, 2025. It’s available exclusively for pre-order customers, letting you fully download the game ahead of time and jump in right at release.

How big is the Ghost of Yotei download?

The PS5 download size is exactly 85.119 GB (version 01.002.000). That makes Ghost of Yotei more than twice as large as the original Ghost of Tsushima release in 2020, which required about 35 GB. Even the Director’s Cut of the predecessor only came in at around 60 GB. A possible day-one patch could increase the final installation size slightly.

Story and gameplay: What to expect in Ghost of Yotei

The focus is on Atsu, who sets out on a quest for revenge with an old katana – the same one that nearly killed her in the past. Her targets are six enemies: the Snake, the Oni, the Kitsune, the Spider, the Dragon, and Lord Saito. You can freely choose the order in which to hunt them down. The open world reacts dynamically to your actions and offers many opportunities for exploration.

The combat system mixes melee and ranged encounters, with weapons like dual katanas, Ōdachi, kusarigama, bow, and rifle. On top of that, you can choose between three presentation modes:

  • The Kurosawa Mode pays homage to classic Japanese cinema with black-and-white visuals and film grain.
  • The Miike Mode amplifies blood effects and uses a more direct camera perspective for brutal combat.
  • The Watanabe Mode strips down the interface and features a lo-fi soundtrack for a more relaxed exploration experience.

All modes can be switched on at any time and only affect visuals, not gameplay.
