No Fun on the Handheld

Echoes of the End is barely playable on the Steam Deck

Two warriors stand in a forest clearing, gazing up at a ruin on which a giant Steam Deck lies.

Echoes of the End runs on the Steam Deck only with major compromises. Frequent crashes, low frame rates, and blurry visuals make it barely playable.

Even with all settings at minimum, heavily reduced render scaling, and upscaling tech like FSR or TSR enabled, Echoes of the End rarely pushes past 30 FPS in still scenes on the Steam Deck. In actual gameplay, frame rates often drop below 20 FPS. Combat – which should be one of the game’s highlights – suffers from heavy stuttering and unstable performance.

Echoes of the End on Steam Deck: Not a Handheld Game

Reports on Reddit note frequent crashes when opening menus or pausing in complex areas. The developers are currently testing a fix, but no release date has been announced. The compromises required to run the game on the Steam Deck also come at the expense of visuals: Using “Ultra Performance” settings for FSR or TSR results in a heavily blurred image, smeared details, and choppy animations. The visual downgrades are so severe that the game loses nearly all of its intended visual appeal.

Echoes of the End: Tips for Better Playability on the Steam Deck

If you still want to give the game a shot, you can stabilize performance somewhat with a few tweaks: Set all graphics options to “Low” and enable a frame limit of 30 or 40 FPS. Trying alternative Proton versions like Proton GE or increasing VRAM in the BIOS to 4GB may also help. Tools like “Lossless Scaling” can artificially boost frame rates but further degrade image quality.

Bottom Line: Wait for Updates

Echoes of the End is currently only playable on the Steam Deck with significant limitations. Technically savvy players with a high tolerance for compromises might make it work, but for most a console or high-end PC is the better choice. There is hope, however, as the developers are actively working on optimizations. A future update could improve the situation. Until then, the Steam Deck remains a stopgap solution for this title.
