Bandai Namco is bringing back its beloved action-RPG series with Code Vein 2, launching in late January 2026. Fans of the original can look forward to a bleak, post-apocalyptic world packed with terrifying creatures, demanding combat, and an emotionally charged narrative. This guide has you covered on release details, story, new features, and how to try out the free demo.

When is Code Vein 2 Coming?

Code Vein 2 is set to launch on January 30, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. You can get hands-on a week before release with a free demo, dropping January 22 on Steam and January 23 on the PlayStation and Xbox stores. The demo focuses on the character creator and lets you explore the central hub, MagMell. Any Revenant character you design can be carried over into the full game.

What Does the Demo Offer?

The demo, titled “Character Creator,” lets you:

  • Build your own Revenant hunter with deep customization for face, hairstyle, accessories, and makeup.
  • Visit the MagMell Institute, your main hub in the game.
  • Use the built-in photo mode and interact with environments like a hot spring.
  • Transfer your demo character into the final release.

Combat isn’t part of the demo. It’s really about getting you ready for the main game and giving a taste of what’s to come.

What’s the Story in Code Vein 2?

Set in a shattered future, humanity and Revenants are locked in a battle for survival. A mysterious force called Luna Rapacis has turned most Revenants into mindless “Horrors.” As a Revenant hunter, you and Lou—a mysterious girl who revived you with her heart—travel back in time to stop the catastrophe at its source.

Your journey through past and present introduces you to other characters like Josée, who can support you in battle or share their powers. The story stretches across a century of conflict between humans and Revenants, constantly questioning whether fate is truly set in stone.

How Does the Combat System Work?

Code Vein 2 expands on the original’s Soulslike combat with a host of new elements. Classic weapons like one- and two-handed swords, hammers, bayonets, and halberds return, joined by new arrivals: dual blades, rune swords, and the Reaper Jail—complete with a scythe.

The real game-changer, though, is the introduction of “Formae”—abilities that emerge from your connections with other characters, granting powerful attacks or status effects. With “Bequeathed Formae,” you can even summon unique weapons like the “Absolute Executioner” sword, a devastating but high-risk option.

You’ll also find new Jails like the “Hound Jail,” summoning bloodthirsty wolves, and the “Reaper Jail,” equipping you with a scythe. The signature Blood Veils are back too, now as part of an expanded gear system called the “Cage.”

What’s New With the Partner System?

You’ll always have a companion fighting alongside you, either acting independently in Summon Mode or fusing with your character in Assimilation Mode. Assimilation Mode amps up both your defense and attack power, making it a clutch move against tougher enemies.

Each partner comes with unique strengths, new attack types, and even strategic advantages. But they’re more than just backup: these companions are tightly woven into the story, adding emotional depth and branching choices.
