At the very start of the main story in Borderlands 4, you’ll be thrown into the mission “Recruitment Drive”. Claptrap walks you through the basics until you suddenly find yourself stuck in front of a blocked elevator. Without clearance you can’t proceed, and many players get stuck here. To save you the frustration, we’ll show you how to activate the elevator as quickly as possible.

Borderlands 4: Missing elevator clearance

Once you’ve taken over the radio tower and fought your way up, you’ll face your first terminal that requires elevator clearance. The quest doesn’t give much direction at this point, and Claptrap only hints that you should take a closer look around.

How to unlock the elevator

To activate the elevator, you’ll need the Bolt from a fallen soldier:

  • Right near the elevator you’ll find a dead soldier lying on the ground with a glowing green bolt in the back of his neck.
  • As you approach the body, you’ll get the option to pull the bolt from his neck.

Once collected, the bolt automatically goes into your inventory and works as the key for the elevator terminal. Interact with the panel, and the elevator will run without any issues.

Elevator activated – what’s next?

Once the elevator is unlocked, the next Claptrap cutscene will trigger. From here, you continue the mission and gain access to new areas of Kairos. The clearance remains permanent – so you won’t have to repeat this step.
