20, 45, or even 80 hours? Here’s how much playtime you should expect to spend in Obsidian’s epic RPG Avowed.

After its Xbox and PC release nearly one year ago, Avowed is now finally available on PlayStation 5. We’ve already wrapped up our review and can offer some clarity about its length. Spoiler: Comparisons to the supposedly similar length of The Outer Worlds turned out to be way off.

Avowed Playtime: Main Story, Side Quests & 100% Completion

How long Avowed takes depends heavily on how thoroughly you explore its fantasy world and how many optional activities you dive into:

  • Main story only: If you focus strictly on the central storyline surrounding the mysterious Dreamscourge plague, expect roughly 25 hours of playtime. Be warned: skipping side quests and steady upgrades can make Normal difficulty feel pretty punishing.
  • Main story plus some side quests: For a healthy mix of story missions and optional content, budget 40 to 60 hours. This approach also helps keep you competitive in combat.
  • Full completion: If you want to explore every corner of the map, finish all side quests, and 100% the game, you’re looking at a hefty 60 to 80 hours—or more.

For comparison, a full completion run in The Outer Worlds took around 40 hours. That makes Avowed nearly twice as expansive as Obsidian’s sci-fi RPG.

Avowed Features Four Expansive Regions

While Avowed isn’t built as one seamless open world, its four major regions are sprawling and fully explorable. The sense of discovery feels every bit like a traditional open-world RPG—and it can easily add dozens of hours to your playthrough.

Beyond the main storyline, you’ll find plenty of engaging side quests that dive deeper into the game’s lore and backstory. Optional objectives, collectible hunting, and freeform exploration across richly detailed environments further extend your time in the world.

In our review, Avowed stood out as a handcrafted RPG gem that plays confidently to its strengths: a gripping narrative, rewarding exploration, and satisfying action combat. Visually and mechanically, Obsidian Entertainment delivers a cohesive package that fantasy RPG fans won’t want to miss.
