GTA 6 is scheduled to release at the end of 2026 for consoles and PC. Here is what we currently know about a possible launch in Xbox Game Pass.
With Grand Theft Auto 6, one of the biggest game releases of the coming years is approaching. At the same time, Xbox Game Pass has become a central part of everyday gaming for many of you. That naturally raises the question: Will GTA 6 be available in the subscription service right at launch, or will it stick to the traditional full-price model?
GTA 6: A Day-One Game Pass Release Is Unlikely
Take-Two Interactive traditionally relies on a premium release strategy for its biggest franchises. Blockbuster titles are typically sold at the regular retail price first, allowing the publisher to maximize revenue through strong early sales.
This potential is likely to be enormous for a title like GTA 6. The series is one of the most commercially successful franchises in the industry. Launching the game immediately in Game Pass would mean that a portion of potential buyers might instead access it through a subscription. For the publisher, this raises the economic question of whether a subscription deal could offset that effect. Based on Take-Two’s previous strategy, there is little indication that such a model will be chosen at launch.
What Role Subscription Services Could Play Long Term
However, a game not appearing in Game Pass at launch does not mean it will never show up there. Previous Rockstar titles have been integrated into subscription services years after their release.
A later step in this direction can make strategic sense:
- Maximize revenue through full-price sales first
- Reach new audiences later through subscription services
- Create additional monetization opportunities through online content and expansions
Especially for a long-term online mode, a later subscription release could help expand the player base even further. Something similar happened with GTA 5, which appeared in subscription services several years after its original release.

What Does This Mean for You?
If you want to play GTA 6 right at launch, you should currently expect to purchase the game at the standard retail price. Day-one access through Xbox Game Pass appears unlikely at the moment.
In the long run, a later integration into a subscription service cannot be ruled out. Based on previous examples, however, several years usually pass between the initial release and a potential inclusion in a subscription offering.
