Finding Your Way in the Sanatorium: Horse Statue and Angel Key
After Grace frees herself, your exploration of the sanatorium begins. Leave the starting room and follow the corridor straight ahead. Along the way, you’ll come across several light switches you can interact with. Some work properly, others only emit flickering light. It’s still important to activate them, as light will become your best ally later on.
Once you flip the switch facing down the hallway, a distinctive horse statue appears at the far end. It serves as your central landmark for this section.

Keep left at the statue, ignore the nearby rooms for now and walk to the end of the corridor. In a corner with a sofa and a small table, you’ll find an Angel Key in a drawer. This key unlocks Room 201 near the statue and grants you access to your first safe area.
Room 201: Save Point and Green Battery
Room 201 is more than just a side room. There’s a typewriter here that allows you to save your progress, make sure to use it. You’ll also discover the green battery in this room, which you need to power the gate at the end of the corridor.

However, the battery is secured and can’t be removed right away. You’ll need a screwdriver to detach it. Inside a cabinet, you’ll also find a lighter that lets you illuminate dark areas. With that, you’re ready for the next step.
Room 202: The Clue About the Screwdriver
Head back into the corridor and enter Room 202. Using the lighter, you can explore the room more thoroughly. Among documents and environmental details, you’ll find the crucial clue: the required screwdriver is located in the nurses’ station.
- Note: The nurses’ station is not explicitly labeled as such. In the game, it’s marked “Staff only.” Once you see that on the door, you’re in the right place.
As soon as you pass through the small kitchenette in front of the nurses’ station, a short sequence triggers, introducing you to a shadow creature.
The Shadow Creature: Stay in the Light
The shadow creature moves slowly but is highly sensitive to light. Brightly lit rooms are your main defense. When it appears, don’t run around aimlessly. Instead, retreat deliberately into illuminated areas. Darkness is its advantage, light is your protection. This principle will guide you throughout the entire section. Rushing blindly down the corridor won’t help. The creature knows hidden paths and can cut you off if needed.

Nurses’ Station: Hiding and Moving the Cart
The nurses’ station is the most important room in this part of the sanatorium, as it’s where you’ll obtain the tool you’re looking for. You can hide beneath a toppled shelf, specifically an improvised furniture barricade. This hiding spot becomes crucial once the monster appears.

The screwdriver sits on top of a cabinet inside a red toolbox. To reach it, you’ll need to pull a movable cart over to the cabinet. The problem is that moving the cart creates noise and attracts the shadow creature.
Proceed as follows:
- Make sure the monster isn’t nearby.
- Push the cart a short distance toward the cabinet.
- As soon as the creature appears or you hear footsteps, crouch under the shelf and extinguish the lighter.
- Remain completely still until it leaves the room.
Repeat this process until the cart is in the correct position. Then climb up, open the toolbox and take the screwdriver.
Using the Screwdriver to Get the Battery
After picking up the screwdriver, the monster becomes active again. Stay calm, use light sources and carefully make your way back to Room 201. If the creature blocks your path, retreat briefly into a lit area until it moves on.
In Room 201, use the screwdriver to remove the secured battery. You’ll finally have the missing power source in your inventory.
Activate the Gate and Escape
Head to the locked gate at the end of the corridor. Insert the battery to restore power to the system and open the metal barrier. A short cutscene follows before you can continue with the story.
