That said, your journey through the Living Lands is no walk in the park. We’ve put together essential tips to ensure you get off to the best possible start.

Avowed Tips: Which Class Should You Choose?

At the start of Avowed, you’ll choose your character’s background. Your options are:

  • Arcane Scholar
  • Court Augur
  • Noble Scion
  • Vanguard Scout
  • War Hero

Don’t stress too much about this decision. Your background choice doesn’t have far-reaching consequences. It mainly shapes additional dialogue options and helps define your character’s role-playing flavor.

No matter which background you pick, you can fully customize your build throughout the game and gain access to all weapons and attributes.

Avowed: Tips for Treasure Hunters and Explorers

Use Your Climbing Skills and Scan the Horizon

For a fantasy RPG, Avowed is surprisingly vertical. When exploring the Living Lands, always look for rocky ledges, scaffolding, or other ways to gain elevation. You can climb nearly every mountain and building.

Keep your eyes open and use high vantage points to scout the distance. If something catches your eye on the horizon, head toward it—you’re almost guaranteed to find valuable loot.

Exploration Always Pays Off

As a rule of thumb: exploring is always worth it. Off the beaten path, you’ll find crucial upgrade materials for your gear, along with weapons and accessories you’ll need later on.

Quest markers aren’t always reliable in Avowed. They point you in the right general direction but don’t account for impassable terrain, unclimbable cliffs, or blocked routes. Always check the map before sprinting off.

Keep Your Ears Open

You should absolutely play Avowed with a quality spatial audio headset. Not only is the sound design during combat and exploration excellent, but it also helps you locate hidden loot.

Listen for the soft chiming sound in your headphones. It signals treasure nearby and grows louder as you approach it.

Lockpicks Are Your Best Friend

Many of the most valuable treasure chests are locked. Take every opportunity to stock up on lockpicks from merchants—you can never have too many.

Crafting Tips for Avowed

Upgrade Your Gear Regularly

Weapons in Avowed are divided into one-handed and two-handed melee or ranged categories. Different types—such as swords, greatswords, axes, arquebuses, and wands—can be upgraded at your companion camp, and you should do so frequently. The same goes for armor.

Which Weapons Should You Dismantle—and Which Should You Keep?

You’ll find upgrade materials in the world (see Exploration), but you can also dismantle weapons and armor or buy materials outright. The question is: which items can you safely part with?

Here’s our advice: Once you’ve found your first unique weapons and armor pieces with special abilities that suit your playstyle, dismantle everything from “common” to “superb” quality. Funnel those resources into upgrading your favorite gear.

Focus your crafting efforts entirely on unique weapons. Only these can be upgraded to a fifth (legendary) tier. They’re also the only items that come with special bonus abilities and can be enchanted with buffs.

Avowed: General Tips for Combat, Quests, and Items

Be Careful When Choosing Quests

Enemies do not scale with your level—they have fixed power levels. You’ll quickly notice when you’re outmatched in certain regions, especially if you haven’t upgraded your gear. Pay attention to the skull indicators in quest descriptions and enemy health bars.

Even on normal difficulty, combat in Avowed can be tough. Put quests with two skulls or more on hold. Upgrade your equipment, explore, and complete easier side quests first to gain experience and refine your build.

How to Take Down Enemy Groups

In the Living Lands, you’ll often face enemy groups. Xaurips, skeletons, and later the Steel Garrote frequently bring along a healer who constantly restores health and applies buffs.

Priests and shamans should always be your first target. Take them out quickly, or you’ll struggle to break through the constantly healing frontline. After that, focus on ranged enemies like archers and mages before calmly finishing off the heavy hitters.

Return to Your Companion Camp Regularly

In each new region, you can set up camp at large Adra Stones. There, you can upgrade gear, cook provisions, and enchant unique weapons. What’s less obvious: if you don’t return regularly, you’ll miss interesting story moments.

Your companions frequently want to discuss recent events, and the voice in your head visits you in your sleep. Make it a habit to check in at camp after completing major story beats.

You Can Walk on Water in Avowed—With This Item

Finally, here’s a small but crucial early-game tip. In the first region especially, you’ll notice that water can block your progress. Keep an eye out for—and always carry—“Rymrgand’s Eye.” This plant serves as a throwable weapon that deals frost damage.

It doesn’t just freeze enemies and brittle gates—you can also create an ice platform on water. That lets you reach higher ledges from below. Just be careful: the ice doesn’t last forever.
