In this article, we explain the multiplayer and co-op mode and show you how to play Heartopia together with others.
At first glance, Heartopia is a calm, personal feel-good game. But behind its cozy facade lies a multiplayer and co-op system that opens up many new possibilities. Instead of classic lobbies or matchmaking, the game focuses on social closeness, shared activities, and long-term friendships. If you are wondering how multiplayer in Heartopia really works and whether co-op is worth it, you are in the right place. We show you how to head out into the world together with your friends.
Multiplayer in Heartopia: Is co-op mandatory?
Heartopia’s multiplayer mode does not force itself on you. You can spend hours building, decorating, and exploring on your own without ever meeting another player. As soon as you decide to play with others, you can connect at any time, send friend requests, or invite your friends into the game.
Instead of competition, the focus is on shared experiences. You visit each other, walk through cities together, and spend time on the same hobbies. Multiplayer feels more like a digital get-together than a classic online mode.
What does the co-op mode in Heartopia include?
Co-op in Heartopia does not mean splitting up tasks or coordinating perfectly. You are simply together in one world and do whatever you feel like. That is exactly what makes the co-op mode so relaxed.
Playing together really shines in the small moments: fishing side by side, discovering rare animals, or just taking photos together. You decide for yourselves how intense or casual you want the cooperation to be.
- Note: Players who pass by your house can, among other things, water your plants and remove weeds from your garden beds. This is another way to make contacts within the game.

A central element of multiplayer is the friendship system. Relationships between players develop over time and through shared actions. The more often you interact with each other, the more options you unlock. This includes not only cosmetic extras like emotes, but also new forms of cooperation.
What shared activities are there?
Even though Heartopia is not a classic co-op game, there are many things that simply feel better together than alone:
- Exploring the world
- Collecting animals, plants, and motifs
- Decorating rooms
- Taking photos together and casual social interactions
Public or private play spaces?
Multiplayer takes place either in public environments or in private cities. Public areas feel lively but remain manageable. Private cities, on the other hand, are perfect if you want to spend time specifically with certain friends. This creates something close to a virtual meeting place that belongs only to you. This separation ensures that you decide for yourself how social your gameplay experience should be, spontaneous or deliberately planned.
Adding friends in Heartopia: how it works
To play with friends in Heartopia, you first need to add them using their personal ID. Every player has a so-called D.G. Member UID that is uniquely linked to their profile. You can find your own UID directly in the game, either at the bottom of the screen or via your profile in the smartwatch menu, directly below your photo.

Once you have a friend’s UID, open the friendship journal, tap the search icon, and enter the code. After confirming, the friend request is sent. As soon as it is accepted, the person will permanently appear in your friends list. From that moment on, you can visit each other and jump into multiplayer together.
Can I play Heartopia solo?
If you enjoy Heartopia as a pure single-player game, you do not have to change anything. Multiplayer is not mandatory. You will occasionally encounter other players in the game world, but you are not forced to interact with them.
However, if you like sharing your creativity, gathering inspiration, or simply spending time with friends in a calm game world, Heartopia unfolds a very special quality in co-op mode.
