Heartopia is a cozy life and building simulation where you design houses, build relationships, and enjoy various hobbies. One of the most important and relaxing activities is fishing. In this guide, you will learn in detail how to unlock fishing, where you can fish, how the mechanics work, and which levels and rewards await you.

Why Fishing in Heartopia Is Worth It

Once you have learned how to fish, you can catch fish yourself and use them in different ways. Fish can be placed in aquariums, processed further or used for cooking, or handed in for quests and other tasks. Every newly caught fish species is also recorded in your catalog, making fishing especially appealing for collectors.

Heartopia: How to Learn Fishing

Your First Encounter With Vanya

After your first night in the new house, the resident Vanya appears. She talks to you about the aquarium you previously received as a gift from Bob. Vanya asks you to craft a repair box for her fishing rod, as it has broken.

Once you have crafted the repair box and fixed Vanya’s fishing rod, talk to her again. This completes the first step, but you will not be able to fish yourself yet.

Unlocking Fishing

After earning your first income medals and ranking up as a Builder via your watch, you can unlock fishing as a hobby through Vanya. To do so, you need the hobby expansion voucher, which you receive when reaching level 2 in the Heritage Association. Hand this voucher to Vanya to permanently unlock fishing.

Equipping and Using the Fishing Rod

You can equip the fishing rod via your toolbox. Once equipped, hold it in your hand and head to a natural body of water such as a pond or lake.

How Fishing Works

Hold the fishing rod and stand near the water. The bobber will appear automatically. Try to place it as close as possible to a visible fish shadow. Then hold down the cast button in the bottom right corner to aim more precisely.

Pay attention to the color of the fishing line. As soon as it turns red, you should briefly release it so you do not miss the right moment. With a bit of practice, you will quickly get a feel for the timing. Larger fish are often more stubborn than smaller ones, so you usually need to loosen the rod briefly. You can already tell from the shadow whether it is a rarer fish or not.

  • Note: Some smaller fish can also be harder to catch. You will notice this if the fishing line can only be pulled back with difficulty. In many cases, these turn out to be shrimp.

First Fishing Quest in Heartopia

After catching three fish in the nearby pond, you can return to Vanya. This completes your first fishing quest and deepens your introduction to the hobby.

All caught fish are automatically stored in your watch. There you can check at any time which fish species you have already caught and how far your collection progress is.

Unlocking and Using Fish Bait

After helping Vanya during the main story by luring a cat off the roof, which requires a fish, you will receive a crafting book for fish bait as a reward.

Using fish bait is simple. Throw the bait into a natural body of water. Once fish shadows appear, you can cast your line and fish as usual. If you want to be especially efficient, it is worth crafting several fish baits in advance or buying them directly from Vanya at the fishing shop.
