Another Xbox Exclusive Heads to PS5 with a Major Free Update

Avowed: Fantasy-Charakter mit Bogen und Pfeilen im Close-up, daneben ein PlayStation-5-DualSense-Controller – Rollenspiel von Obsidian auf PS5.

Obsidian’s action RPG Avowed is officially making the jump to PlayStation 5 in February 2025 — and it’s bringing a hefty free update for players on all platforms. The studio confirmed the news during the New Game+ Showcase, marking a notable shift for what was previously an Xbox exclusive.

Previously available only on Xbox Series X|S and PC, Avowed will expand its reach with its Playstation 5 debut, arriving almost exactly one year after the game’s original launch. Coinciding with the release, Obsidian is rolling out an anniversary update on February 17 that adds a photo mode, a New Game Plus option, a new weapon type, and fresh cosmetic customization for your character. Players can also look forward to three new playable races—Aumaua, Orlan, and Dwarves. All of these additions will be free for existing owners.

What to expect in Avowed

Set in the universe of the Pillars of Eternity series, Avowed carves out its own identity by focusing on a new region and blending real-time combat with tactical depth. Rather than going all-in on sprawling open-world design or loading up on minigames, the game opts for four tightly crafted regions packed with optional quests and a rich lore backdrop. In our review, Avowed impressed with a flexible class system, a well-thought-out pause-friendly combat system, and parkour mechanics that encourage vertical exploration.

The story centers on a protagonist with a divine calling, navigating a world plagued by a mysterious curse. While the narrative sticks to classic fantasy themes, the execution is solid. The four companions you recruit along the way offer functional depth but don’t delve into elaborate relationship arcs. Obsidian keeps the focus on gameplay rather than complex social systems.

Avowed’s PS5 release follows a growing trend of former Xbox exclusives, like Doom: The Dark Ages and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, making their way to Sony’s console. The move reflects Obsidian’s response to the increasing demand for cross-platform availability, while also rewarding existing fans with meaningful new content.
