Dying Light: The Beast receives Update 1.5, adding a new Nightmare tier with Alpha Volatiles, a hunger system, flashlight mechanics, and exclusive rewards.
Techland is expanding Dying Light: The Beast with a brand-new difficulty setting. Dubbed the “Nightmare Experience,” it’s aimed squarely at veteran players looking for a far more demanding survival challenge. With Patch 1.5, the studio doesn’t just toughen up enemy behavior—it also introduces new gameplay systems, a deadlier mutant type, and additional rewards.
Alpha Volatile Ignores UV Light
The centerpiece of the update is a new enemy type: the “Alpha Volatile.” According to Techland, this powerful infected is the most intelligent variant the Dying Light universe has seen so far.
The Alpha can track your scent, isn’t deterred by UV flashlights, and will pursue you over long distances—until you either reach a safe zone or take it down. This fundamentally changes nighttime gameplay, making stealth and escape far more important than direct confrontation.

The “Nightmare Experience” also introduces new survival mechanics. A hunger system now affects stamina, healing, and combat effectiveness—the longer you go without food, the weaker your character becomes. Light management is more demanding as well: your flashlight gradually loses brightness, begins to flicker, and requires new batteries that must be found or crafted. At the same time, enemies are more alert, react faster, and pick up on sounds and light sources more quickly.
Rewards for Relentless Survivors
Players who overcome the highest difficulty tier can earn exclusive items, including special talismans, a new outfit, and a vehicle paint job. Beyond the gameplay changes, Patch 1.5 also adds new finishers for one-handed weapons and two additional achievements.
Meanwhile, the community event “Call of the Beast” is still ongoing. Participants are currently in week 9, working together to collect millions of items at night. A new goal will unlock on December 18. Techland has also announced a video contest in collaboration with partners like Intel and Alienware, with high-end prizes up for grabs for the most creative submissions.
