Fu Lushou and his “brother” Fu Lubao are among the trickiest NPCs in Where Winds Meet. Both are suspicious, quick-tempered, and can attack without warning. This guide explains how to successfully befriend both of them, which mechanics are at play, and what to do if the interaction fails.

In this Where Winds Meet guide, you’ll learn:

  • Where to find Fu Lushou and Fu Lubao
  • How the AI chat system works for both NPCs
  • Which conversation approaches work and which ones don’t
  • Why Fu Luwa is the key to friendship
  • What happens when Fu Lushou or Fu Lubao attack
  • How to fix technical issues and interaction bugs
  • Whether both NPCs are required for “Old Friends” progression

Where to find Fu Lushou

Fu Lushou hangs out in the area around the General Shrine in Qinghe. You’ll usually find him in one of the huts next to Li Laizuo, lying or leaning on a mat. In that state, you can’t talk to him – no interaction prompt appears.

To start a conversation, you need to wait until Fu Lushou leaves the hut. Change the time of day to the Wu hour. At that time, he’ll stand in front of the General Shrine entrance, rummaging through bushes for treasure. Approach him then, and the chat option will become available.

If Fu Lushou doesn’t appear or is stuck under the ground, leave the area completely, teleport far away, or log out and back in. This resets his AI state and correctly places him in the game world.

Where to find Fu Lubao

Fu Lubao is the grave robber who wanders near the Fighting Pit at the General Shrine. He’s searching for Meow Meow’s treasure and can also be addressed via the AI chat system. Unlike Fu Lushou, you can usually interact with him directly without waiting for a specific time of day.

The two NPCs share an interesting trait: they both consider Fu Luwa, a dog, to be their “big brother.” That connection is the easiest way to win their favor.

How the AI chat system works

Fu Lushou and Fu Lubao fall under the “Old Friends” category in the Jianghu Friends system. Unlike classic quest NPCs, they react to free-text input instead of preset dialog options. The system analyzes your word choice, tone, and the content of your messages.

In practice, that means:

  • There’s no visible mood or affinity bar.
  • Wrong phrasing can immediately trigger hostility.
  • Each attempt can play out differently, even with identical text.
  • The system expects you to fail, reload, and try different approaches.

Both NPCs are designed to challenge you. They’re not classic quest givers but social puzzles that you solve through trial and error.

How to earn Fu Lushou’s trust

Fu Lushou is hunting for treasure and wants usable information – not vague legends. He’s suspicious, easily offended, and will respond to bragging, mockery, or threats with violence. There are two working ways to win his friendship.

Method 1: Mention Fu Luwa

The quickest and safest route is to bring up Fu Luwa. Fu Luwa is a dog you can find in the area behind the General Shrine. Once you unlock the “Animal Language” ability, you can talk to him. You don’t actually have to speak with Fu Luwa first – it’s enough to mention his name in your chat with Fu Lushou.

Phrase your message so it’s clear that you know and respect Fu Luwa. For example:

  • “I am a friend of Fu Luwa.”
  • “Fu Luwa told me about you.”
  • “Your big brother Fu Luwa sent me.”
  • “I’m friends with the Dog Fu Luwa.”

Avoid jokes about the dog or hints that Fu Luwa is lying. Once Fu Lushou recognizes you as someone Fu Luwa vouches for, his attitude completely shifts. The friendship is recorded without you needing to provide any further treasure information.

Method 2: Provide precise treasure information

If you don’t have Animal Language yet, you can also win Fu Lushou over by giving him specific treasure details. The system recognizes when you give a location that corresponds to an actual marker on the map.

The key points are:

  • Describe the location precisely enough that the game can interpret it as a map marker.
  • Avoid vague stories or bragging.
  • Use clear directions or landmarks.

If the system accepts your info, Fu Lushou will leave his spot at the wall and walk into a nearby building. In that state, you sometimes can’t click on him directly anymore, but his chat log remains available in the Jianghu Friends menu. Open the menu and continue the conversation there.

This method is more error-prone because the AI doesn’t always recognize that you’re giving real information. When it does work, it fits Fu Lushou’s personality perfectly: he values reliable data more than flattery.

How to earn Fu Lubao’s trust

Fu Lubao responds to the exact same approach as Fu Lushou. As soon as you mention that you’re friends with Fu Luwa, his affection jumps straight to the maximum.

The same wording works:

Ad
  • “I am a friend of Fu Luwa.”
  • “I’m friends with Dog Fu Luwa.”

The system recognizes the connection, and from that moment on Fu Lubao treats you as trustworthy. You don’t need to take any further steps or hand over items.

Some players report that, in certain quest paths, Fu Lubao accepts Meow Meow’s bell. However, this is not required to become friends with him. The bell is part of a separate questline and has no direct impact on Fu Lubao’s affection value.

What happens if Fu Lushou or Fu Lubao attack?

Both NPCs can suddenly turn hostile if they interpret your answers as a threat or insult. That’s not a bug – it’s part of the system.

If Fu Lushou or Fu Lubao attack:

  • You can run away or teleport out. The AI will disengage and you can talk to them again later.
  • You can kill them. Both NPCs respawn after a short time (in game) and behave as if nothing happened.

You can reset the conversation via the Jianghu Friends menu by clicking the recycle icon. All previous interactions are wiped, and you start over from scratch.

There are no permanent consequences. You don’t lose quest progress or rewards. The system is built around you needing multiple attempts.

Technical issues and fixes

Fu Lushou is notorious for interaction bugs. Many players report that no chat option appears, that he spawns under the ground, or that the conversation cuts off mid-sentence. Here are the most common problems and how to fix them.

Issue: No chat option appears

Unlock the scan ability if you haven’t already. Use it while targeting Fu Lushou. If an inventory window appears, he’s in an active state and can be spoken to.

If that doesn’t help:

  • Leave the area completely.
  • Teleport far away.
  • Log out and back in.
  • Return to the General Shrine and wait for the Wu hour.

Issue: Fu Lushou spawns under the ground

This is a common bug. You can’t pull him out manually without breaking his AI state. Instead, do the following:

  • Leave the area.
  • Log out.
  • Log back in.
  • Return to the shrine.

This reloads the AI and places Fu Lushou correctly.

Issue: Fu Lushou doesn’t respond at the wrong time of day

Fu Lushou is only available for interaction during certain hours of the day. The community reports that the Si and Wu hours are the most reliable. Use a resting bench to fast-forward time and wait until he’s standing in front of the shrine.

Issue: The conversation loops or freezes

Sometimes Fu Lushou repeats the same line no matter how you reply. In that case:

  • Restart the game.
  • Reload the area.
  • Try again at a different time of day.

If Chinese text lines appear, the language pack hasn’t loaded correctly. Restarting the client usually fixes this.

How they differ from other NPCs in Qinghe

Fu Lushou and Fu Lubao are very different from the more structured quests in Qinghe.

For comparison:

  • The “Furnace of Justice” in Kaifeng is a fully scripted sequence with clear objectives and checklists.
  • “Echoes in the Shrine” offers environmental puzzles and combat with clear success markers.
  • “Gift of Speech” debates present you with cards, health bars, and fixed answers.

Fu Lushou offers none of that. No conversation health bar, no card deck, no success pop-up. He embodies the side of Where Winds Meet that treats text itself as gameplay: you’re meant to read personalities, adjust your tone, and accept that sometimes a swordsman strikes first and asks questions later.
