With Subnautica 2, another deep-sea adventure is on the horizon. Here’s everything we know about the release, potential co-op mode, and more.
Subnautica 2 is the next entry in the popular underwater survival series by Unknown Worlds Entertainment. After the success of the original Subnautica and Below Zero, the sequel once again dives into the depths — featuring a new graphics engine, co-op mode, and a mysterious storyline. We’ve summarized all key details about the release, platforms, gameplay, and current development progress.
When Will Subnautica 2 Release?
Subnautica 2 was originally planned to enter Early Access in 2025. However, Unknown Worlds officially announced a delay to 2026. According to the studio, feedback from internal testing revealed that further improvements are needed before launch.
No exact Early Access date has been shared yet. The full release is expected in 2027 or 2028, as the developers plan to keep the game in Early Access for about two to three years.
Which Platforms Will Subnautica 2 Be On?
Subnautica 2 will launch in Early Access for PC and Xbox Series X|S. The PC version will be available via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Windows Store. A PlayStation release has not yet been confirmed. Cross-play between platforms is also unconfirmed at this stage.
What’s New in Subnautica 2?
Subnautica 2 introduces a range of new features that expand the gameplay experience in multiple ways:
New Engine: Unreal Engine 5
Unlike its predecessors, Subnautica 2 is being developed using Unreal Engine 5. Early screenshots and concept art reveal stunning lighting effects, detailed biomes, and realistic animations. The switch to the new engine aims to boost both visual fidelity and technical stability.
Co-op Mode for Up to Four Players
For the first time in the series, Subnautica 2 will include an official multiplayer mode. You can explore, build bases, and survive the depths either solo or with up to three friends. Still, the developers emphasize that Subnautica 2 remains primarily a single-player experience — co-op is meant as an optional addition.
New World, New Story
The story of Subnautica 2 takes place on an entirely new ocean planet, following the events of Subnautica: Below Zero. You play as a pioneer stranded on an alien world, guided by your ship’s AI to continue the mission — even though the planet seems hostile to human life. Unless, of course, you change what it means to be human.
Reworked Base-Building
The base-building system has been redesigned to offer greater flexibility and creativity. New tools and modules allow players to customize underwater habitats to better suit their surroundings and playstyle.
New Biomes and Creatures
Subnautica 2 features a completely new underwater world filled with diverse biomes — from floating coral forests to deep trench landscapes. One of the largest creatures revealed so far is the “Collector,” a massive Leviathan introduced in a developer diary. You can scan creatures, collect samples, and study their biology. Using a new tool called the Biosampler, you can even perform genetic modifications.
Survival Gameplay with Depth
The gameplay follows the familiar Subnautica formula: survive, explore, build. You’ll start with basic tools like a scanner and flashlight, gradually improving your equipment as you progress. Your journey takes you deeper into a world full of danger, mystery, and alien lifeforms.
