You can get the Dual Katana fairly early in Ghost of Yotei. Here’s exactly how to unlock it.
The Dual Katana is one of the most exciting weapons in Ghost of Yotei because it makes Atsu’s already nimble combat style even more aggressive. It’s also ideal against enemies attacking you with a spear. Here you’ll find the exact location, how to unlock the weapon, and what to watch out for when using it.
What Is the Dual Katana?
The Dual Katana consists of two blades that Atsu wields simultaneously. It’s the perfect choice if you prefer fast, fluid attacks. Compared to the standard blade, it deals slightly less damage per hit but makes up for it with a much higher attack speed. It’s especially effective against foes using polearms like the Yari or Naginata.
Ghost of Yotei: Dual Katana Location
You’ll find the Dual Katana quite early, once you reach the Yotei Grasslands. Head toward Mount Yotei and look for Hanbei’s House. The building is tucked between rocks and sits a bit off to the side on the slope. Enter the house and examine the katana on the wall; shortly after, a story sequence with Hanbei will automatically begin.

Quest “The Way of the Dual Katana”
To obtain the Dual Katana, you must complete the quest “The Way of the Dual Katana.” It becomes available automatically once you arrive in the Grasslands after the prologue. There are no additional requirements. In this quest, Hanbei teaches you the basics of the Dual Katana combat style.
- Note: If you unlock all melee weapons, there’s a trophy waiting for you.
To earn the new weapon, you must execute several button combinations perfectly in sequence to slice through bamboo. Don’t worry: You might not get it right immediately, and the combinations become easier each day, so you should succeed by the third day. Afterwards, you’ll need to cut several glowing coals within a short time. What felt hard on day one will now click. Once you finish, you’ll receive the weapon as your reward.
Technical Details and Usage
The Dual Katana is built for speed and excels at putting constant pressure on enemies with long or slow weapons. It’s less effective against classic swordfighters. In those cases, it’s worth switching back to the Wolf Blade.
- Equipment Combo: R2, then X
- Weapon Matchups: Strong against spears (Yari, Naginata)
- Weaknesses: Lower guard break potential and damage per hit
If you’ve mastered dodge timing and counters, this weapon lets you unleash a veritable flood of attacks.
Materials and Upgrades
Once you have the Dual Katana, you can further upgrade it at the forge. You’ll need the following resources:
- 15 Oni Mask Pieces
- 20 Shinobi Steel
- 15 Weapon Parts
- 15 Rare Metal
You’ll primarily find these materials on elite enemies, in enemy camps, or as rewards for completing side quests in the Yotei Grasslands.
