In Borderlands 4, you’ll get your first bike early on. We’ll show you how to unlock it, get more vehicles, and customize them.
Borderlands 4 isn’t just about shooting and looting – your way of getting around matters a lot too. The world is bigger than ever, and traveling on foot quickly becomes tedious. That’s where vehicles come in. You’ll receive your first ride early in the game and can unlock more bikes and cars as you progress. In this guide, you’ll learn how to get your first vehicle, unlock additional models, and everything you need to know about customization.
Vehicles in Borderlands 4 – What’s Changed?
If you’ve played the previous games, you’ll notice right away: things work differently in Borderlands 4. Catch-A-Ride stations are gone, replaced by the ability to summon your bike at any time with the press of a button. There are no multi-seaters anymore either – each of you gets your own ride. It may feel leaner, but it also makes handling simpler and ensures you’re always mobile.
How to Get Your First Vehicle – the Digirunner Bike
Your entry into motorized Borderlands life happens naturally through the main story. By the end of the third main mission “Down and Outbound” (German: Runter und raus), you’ll be given the bike. This quest takes you to resistance leader Rush and his mechanic Conway. She provides you with the MAV-880 Digirunner bike – and from then on, it’s yours permanently.
- You can summon it via the controller D-pad (right or left, depending on platform) or on PC with the default key X.
- If your bike gets destroyed, just wait for a short cooldown before you can call it again.
The Digirunner comes with boost, drift, and even jump abilities. It also has built-in light weapons (machine gun & rockets). While it doesn’t replace your main guns, it makes travel much more flexible against smaller enemy groups.

Unlocking More Vehicles and Customization
Your bike is just the start. As you progress through the story and side missions, you’ll unlock additional vehicles. They differ in:
- Acceleration & handling
- Armor & durability
- Looks & skins
You’ll receive new vehicles as rewards for quests or challenges – so it’s worth checking your mission log. While it doesn’t always show the exact model, you’ll be able to tell whether the reward is a vehicle or a skin.
You can customize vehicles both visually and functionally directly from the menu: open the customization tab – “Vehicle” – and swap models or paint jobs.

Tips for a Perfect Start
To help you move around the map more easily from the very beginning, here are a few pointers:
- Use the Digirunner bike regularly, even for short distances. It makes you faster and saves ammo against small enemy groups.
- Check side missions early on – many of them reward you with vehicles or skins for more variety.
