Between the story quests “First Blood” and “Power Gambit”, you’ll have the chance to pick up a few side quests at City Hall in Dying Light: The Beast. One of them is “What Lurks Beyond the Pines,” which leads you to a cable puzzle inside a dark cave full of Infected. Here’s how to solve the quest and what rewards you’ll earn.

Talk to Eli and Find William

Speak with Eli at City Hall, and he’ll ask you to find his father, William. Start by checking his old house at the lake basin in the national park. You’ll find it outside the city limits, south of City Hall.

Before entering the house, you’ll need to clear out a few zombies. Watch out: there’s a Volatile perched on the roof! Go inside through the front door and pick up the letter from William’s wife on the shelf next to the dining table, as well as the spare cave key on the map table in the side room. On the floor next to the bed, you’ll also find a thank-you note.

Next, head south into the mountains. Use the key to unlock the cave gate. Follow the path until you finally meet William. He mistakes you for his son Eli. Play along, and he’ll tell you why he came to the cave.

Connecting the Cables

Grab the first cable and climb the rock wall on the right to the explosives. Attach the cable and collect the second cable. Things get trickier here. Jump across to the ledges opposite, climb to the top, and shimmy left. Turn east and leap to the opposite ledges. From the right side, you’ll reach a bridge. Follow the path and climb the next rock wall to the second explosives depot.

The third cable is already in place but doesn’t work. Follow it. After the ladder, jump across a gap. Careful: the zombie on the other side is only pretending to sleep. Stick to the right and jump another gap with a ladder. Keep right until you reach a ledge. When the coast is clear, drop down.

Now you’ll need to be extremely careful! Sneak to the corpse near the blue cable and pick up the dirty note. Right next to it is the cable break – repair it. The fourth explosives charge is in the northwest. Keep following the cable. Stay crouched, hug the right-hand rock wall, and only flick on your flashlight briefly if needed. It’s better to rely on your beast senses. If you must kill zombies along the way, make sure it’s silent.

Once you reach the final cable, head northwest. Look for white ledges on the rock wall you can climb. From there, you’ll reach a platform with a ladder. Climb up, go straight ahead, and shimmy left across the rock ledges to the last explosives depot. Attach the cable and follow the path back to William.

After the conversation, you just need to find your way out of the cave. Use the air bubbles in the water as a guide. Once you’re back outside, report to Eli at City Hall. He’ll give you his father’s knife. You’ll also receive the key item Blueprint Guide to upgrade your designs, along with 10,000 XP.

  • +33% ambush damage
  • Durability: 145
