Now, as Meta pulls back, there\u2019s turbulence\u2014but also, maybe, a long-overdue chance for a genuine reset.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On January 14, 2026, the New York Times and UploadVR broke the news: Meta is laying off around 1,500 employees from Reality Labs and shutting down three of its flagship VR studios. Sanzaru Games (the team behind Asgard&#8217;s Wrath 1 &amp; 2), Twisted Pixel (Marvel&#8217;s Deadpool VR), and Armature Studio (Resident Evil 4 VR) are all out. The impact? Seismic\u2014but not shocking. It\u2019s the inevitable result of a decade in which Meta funneled billions into VR, shaping the space in its own image, but never quite delivering on the promise. That Meta is now pivoting to \u201cwearables\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/space4games.com\/en\/tech-en\/meta-ray-ban-display-all-the-details-on-tech-price-release-and-controls\/\">Ray-Ban-branded AI glasses<\/a>\u2014and quietly shelving its metaverse ambitions\u2014is less a bold strategic move than a white flag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-too-much-too-fast-and-all-in-the-wrong-direction\">Too Much, Too Fast\u2014and All in the Wrong Direction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It started with an explosion of optimism. When Facebook snapped up Oculus in 2014, the tech world lost its mind: this wasn\u2019t just a big buyout, it was a signal that VR might become the next big thing. Mark Zuckerberg told anyone who\u2019d listen that VR would be \u201cthe next major platform\u201d after smartphones. Fast forward through $70 billion and ten years, and what\u2019s left? The original Oculus Rift stood for open, PC-based innovation\u2014but its DNA was spliced and mutated into the <a href=\"https:\/\/space4games.com\/en\/virtual-reality-en\/meta-quest-3-buying-guide\/\">Quest<\/a>, a closed, mass-market device entirely under Meta\u2019s control. Flooded with Meta\u2019s cash, the Quest was sold below cost and equipped with a Meta-owned app store. Who\u2019s going to double down on a technology that just lost its sugar daddy? Developers who built their businesses on Meta\u2019s ecosystem\u2014funding, marketing, platform access\u2014are suddenly standing on quicksand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But here\u2019s the twist: this rupture might be the very thing VR has needed all along. With Meta\u2019s gravitational pull gone, the original drivers of VR could finally get back in the game. Valve, for example, couldn\u2019t have picked a better time to roll out their <a href=\"https:\/\/space4games.com\/en\/virtual-reality-en\/valve-steam-frame-info-guide\/\">Steam Frame<\/a> sequel to the Valve Index. The PC might reclaim its spot as the VR platform of choice. Burned-out enthusiasts could come home, and Quest users left in the lurch may rediscover SteamVR\u2019s open ecosystem. Google and Samsung are back at the table with Android XR and <a href=\"https:\/\/space4games.com\/en\/virtual-reality-en\/samsung-galaxy-xr-mixed-reality-headset-info-guide\/\">Galaxy XR<\/a>, and\u2014if we\u2019re very, very lucky\u2014maybe Sony will take another swing with <a href=\"https:\/\/space4games.com\/en\/virtual-reality-en\/playstation-vr3-is-a-new-vr-headset-from-sony-coming-all-info-on-release-price-technology\/\">PlayStation VR3<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Will this all lead to a stable, healthy market or just more fragmentation? That\u2019s anyone\u2019s guess. What\u2019s certain: the era of one company promising to deliver \u201cthe future\u201d is over. Now, for the first time in a decade, the VR industry has a real shot at growing up on its own terms. Meta didn\u2019t kill VR. But it kept it from maturing.
