Legendary Publishing is launching a new art book devoted entirely to the Monsterverse. “Godzilla x Kong: The Art of Monsterverse Comics” collects 240 pages of illustrations spanning more than twelve years of comic book history around the two Titans. The project is being funded through Kickstarter — and that alone is already giving fans plenty to talk about.

Godzilla x Kong art book: What’s inside

The focus of the new Godzilla x Kong art book is clearly the artwork. You’ll find pieces by well-known artists such as Arthur Adams, Christian Ward, and Drew Johnson. There is also an exclusive cover by EJ Su, created specifically for this book. The format is larger than a standard art book, designed more as a collector’s item for the shelf than something you casually flip through.

Legendary and Rocketship are leaning heavily on extras for the campaign. In addition to the standard edition, backers can get a limited-edition box, signed cards from artists including Alan Quah and Zid, and premium prints on specialty paper. There is even a gold-plated pin set featuring Godzilla and Kong.

Legendary Comics has already canceled one Kickstarter project

Legendary Comics is not a traditional publisher, but part of Legendary Entertainment. Its comics mainly serve to expand well-known movie universes. Monsterverse, Pacific Rim, and Dune are all major brands that get additional stories here. There are original series as well, but they tend to play a smaller role. So if you’re wondering why a project like this is being run through Kickstarter at all, you’re not alone.

In theory, Legendary should not need a crowdfunding model to finance projects like this. That leaves the whole thing with a bit of an aftertaste. Legendary Comics also does not have a spotless track record when it comes to completing these campaigns. A Gundam graphic novel was halted early in 2023 after it failed to draw enough support. That shows pretty clearly just how dependent these projects are on the community.

If you’re interested in Legendary’s new Monsterverse project, however, the odds look very good that it will actually happen. At the time of writing, the campaign still has 28 days to go and sits at €40,791. That puts it just €2,119 short of its funding goal.
