In “Echoes of Silenced Bells,” you explore St. Tyna Monastery with Anca and must find a safe route to the hidden library. In this guide, I’ll walk you through every objective and explain the consequences of the decision at the end of the quest.

The quest “Echoes of Silenced Bells” is part of Anca’s personal questline and becomes available after completing the prologue quest “Smoke and Ash”. It is the first truly complex quest with several optional objectives, all of which are worth completing. Finishing every optional objective costs eight time segments, while focusing only on the essential steps reduces that to six.

  • Warning: Walkthroughs naturally contain spoilers.

Get the Monastery Key First

Before exploring the buildings, you should first pick up the Monastery Key. Leave the study and head to the opposite side of the monastery courtyard. In the northern or northwestern section, you’ll find a small wooden shed next to the chapel along the outer wall. Open the door. The keyring is hanging on the wall directly in front of you. Among other things, this key opens the sacristy and the entrance to the bell tower.

All Optional Objectives in Echoes of Silenced Bells

Infirmary Quest: Find the Relic of St. Tyna

  • Note: The quest involving the relic is optional, but without it you’ll have fewer options available later in Echoes of Silenced Bells.

The infirmary is the first building on the left in the large courtyard with the well, where the nuns gather. You can recognize it by the cross-shaped extensions and the large chimney. Go around the building and look for a window at the back. Several of Brencis’ soldiers have barricaded themselves inside.

The soldiers have been ordered to retrieve the Relic of St. Tyna for Brencis and offer you a deal: Bring them the relic, and they’ll open the upper passage through the infirmary to the library.

Inside the chapel, you’ll find St. Tyna’s desecrated body, but the necklace you’re looking for is missing. During the day, you can also summon the spirit of a dead nun. Possible catalysts include a rosary and a prayer book found inside the chapel. The dead nun eventually confirms that the relic was taken to the sacristy.

  • Note: Investigating the chapel costs one time segment and isn’t necessary if you already know where the relic is located.

Where to find the relic:

The sacristy is located in the northwestern section of the monastery between the dormitories and the chapel. You can recognize the small building by the cross on its roof.

Open the door with the Monastery Key and examine the dead nun inside. You’ll find the Relic of St. Tyna around her neck. Loot the body outside Focus View to actually pick up the amulet.

  • Important: Don’t hand the relic over to Brencis’ soldiers right away. It’s a valuable epic amulet that is particularly useful for a sorcery build. You can both keep the relic and open the route to the library.

Pick Up St. Tyna’s Shinbone

Under the passage connecting the infirmary and the library, you’ll find St. Tyna’s shinbone next to a corpse. It’s easy to miss, but the item becomes useful later during another quest.

Find the Bell Instructions

Enter the dormitory, the building to the left of the sacristy. On the table, you’ll find the document “Campana Loquitur, Vel Introductio Pro Novitiis”. It explains what the monastery’s different bell signals mean.

Even in undeath, the nuns still follow this daily routine:

  • 3 bell tolls: They go to the chapel
  • 4 bell tolls: They go to the infirmary
  • 5 bell tolls: They go to the dormitory

Once you’ve read the document, you don’t need to memorize the numbers. At the bell rope, you can simply choose which signal Coen should give.

The bell tower is on the eastern side of the courtyard, to the right of the church’s main entrance. During the day, open the door with the Monastery Key you found earlier and climb the stairs. At night, Coen’s vampire abilities let you climb across the rooftops to reach the tower. You’ll find the bell rope on the top floor.

Option 1: Send the Nuns to the Chapel

Choose the chapel signal with three bell tolls, and the undead nuns will leave the courtyard and gather inside the church. This clears a direct route to the library for Anca.

Option 2: Give the Relic to the Soldiers

If you previously spoke to Brencis’ men and found the relic, you can return to the infirmary and hand over the amulet. The soldiers keep their word and grant you access through the infirmary to the library.

  • Downside: You permanently lose the relic. For that reason, I wouldn’t recommend this option.

Option 3: Keep the Relic and Kill the Soldiers

Return to the soldiers with the relic and tell them you’ve changed your mind. They’ll open the infirmary and attack you. Defeat the soldiers, then loot their bodies.

  • Advantage: This lets you keep the relic while still gaining access to the infirmary and the route to the library.

The Smartest Approach: Let the Nuns Deal With the Soldiers

Combine the bell tower mechanic with the optional relic objective involving the soldiers. Give the soldiers the relic, then ring the bell four times for the infirmary signal. The undead nuns will storm the infirmary and kill Brencis’ men.

Afterward, ring it three times for the chapel signal. The nuns will leave the infirmary and gather inside the church. You can now loot the dead soldiers without interference, keep the relic, and clear the entire courtyard for Anca at the same time.

The dormitory signal with five bell tolls also moves the undead, but it doesn’t reliably clear Anca’s path to the library and is therefore of little use during the quest.

Return to Anca and Loot the Library

Once you’ve created a safe route, return to the prioress’s study. Speak to Anca and head to the library. This advances time by one more time segment and triggers a cutscene in which you cross the courtyard together.

Take your time in the library and search every bookshelf, stack of books, and container. You’ll find several valuable skill manuals. Once you’ve collected everything, follow Anca into the western room.

Examine the bookshelf she is standing in front of and push it aside. This reveals a secret passage. However, the forbidden books you’re looking for are no longer there: Someone moved them into the catacombs.

Search the Catacombs

Head down the stairs. At the first fork, you’ll find a locked door. You don’t need to worry about it yet—it can only be opened after the upcoming boss fight.

Instead, follow the open passage northwest. You’ll encounter several undead nuns along the way. Unlike the enemies in the monastery courtyard, these nuns don’t get back up after you kill them.

Eventually, you’ll reach a table covered in witchcraft symbols, bloody notes, and clues pointing to a ritual. Continue down the passage until you reach a large double door. Opening it advances time by one time segment and triggers the cutscene before a boss fight.

Boss Fight: How to Beat Leonica

Leonica primarily fights with fast melee attacks and sorcery.

Watch out for these attacks in particular:

Ad
  • Knife attacks: These can be blocked or parried.
  • Voracious Swarm: Leonica summons a swarm from a distance. Dodge to the side.
  • Unblockable area attack: When Leonica is close to you, she creates a dangerous area of effect. Quickly dodge backward.
  • Projectile volley: At longer range, she fires several projectiles in your direction. Dodge to the side.
  • Teleportation: Leonica regularly disappears and reappears in a different position.

After reaching several damage thresholds, Leonica disappears completely and causes more undead nuns to rise. Try to attack them while they’re still getting up. Once they’re dead, Leonica returns and is especially vulnerable for a brief moment.

This cycle repeats several times. After the third major summoning phase, you can defeat Leonica for good and loot the room. Among other items, you’ll find Leonica’s Ring, additional manuals, and the key to the previously locked section of the catacombs.

Choice: Burn the Notes or Let Anca Finish the Ritual?

Speak to Anca afterward. You’ll now learn what Leonica was actually trying to do: She was attempting to break the nuns’ curse. Anca believes she can finish the ritual using Leonica’s notes.

The first timed dialogue choice has no effect on the outcome. The actual decision comes afterward.

Option 1: Burn Leonica’s Notes

If you decide not to let Anca continue the ritual, the notes will be destroyed. Anca is disappointed at first but quickly accepts your decision.

  • The consequence: The nuns remain cursed and stay at the monastery. This decision has no negative impact on continuing Anca’s questline. It also doesn’t prevent a later romance with Anca (guide).

Option 2: Let Anca Perform the Ritual

Give Anca the notes, or allow her to continue, and she will complete Leonica’s ritual. This costs one additional time segment.

  • The consequence: Anca succeeds in breaking the curse, allowing the nuns to finally rest. However, she hints that doing so required additional questionable or unholy bargains. This decision comes up again later in Anca’s questline, but it doesn’t prevent any of her later quests or the romance. If you simply let the decision timer run out, Coen also gives the notes back to Anca and allows her to finish the ritual.

My recommendation: If you want to help the nuns, let Anca perform the ritual. From a gameplay perspective, however, there is no single “right” choice.
