Subnautica 2 finally introduces a proper co-op mode. Here’s how multiplayer and crossplay work in the new underwater survival game.
For the first time in the series, Subnautica 2 features full multiplayer support with co-op gameplay and crossplay. You can build bases together, explore dangerous biomes and survive the deep ocean as a team. We’ll show you how co-op works and what changes once multiple players enter the world.
Co-op was built directly into Subnautica 2
The biggest difference compared to Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero isn’t just the new biomes or creatures. Subnautica 2 was designed with multiplayer in mind from the very beginning. That means you no longer need mods or complicated workarounds to play together. Because of that, the game could easily become one of the best co-op games around.
You simply open your world, invite friends and start the adventure together. The game uses a classic host system, meaning your world remains saved locally on your machine. Once the host goes offline, the session ends for everyone else as well. The system feels somewhat similar to Grounded, where locally saved worlds could also be shared with friends.
For Subnautica 2, this setup actually fits surprisingly well. The game still feels personal and continues to feel like your own survival world, just with multiple players exploring it together.
Up to four players can explore the depths together
Subnautica 2 supports up to four players in multiplayer. Honestly, the game probably doesn’t need more than that. With four people, there’s already a good balance between teamwork and complete chaos.
Inside co-op sessions, players naturally start taking on different roles. One person gathers resources, another focuses on expanding the base or unlocking blueprints, while others explore dangerous areas and search for rare materials. Personally, I think the biggest advantage of co-op is the completely different dynamic it creates. Exploring dark areas alone feels far more tense than doing it with a group, which means you’ll likely progress through the game much faster together.
The dive elevator saves a lot of travel time
One new feature shows especially well how heavily Subnautica 2 was designed around co-op gameplay: the dive elevator. It may sound fairly simple at first, but quickly becomes incredibly useful during normal gameplay.
You can load gathered resources into the system and send them directly back up to your base. Because of that, you no longer have to constantly travel between the surface and deeper regions yourself. Especially during longer expeditions, this saves a huge amount of time.
In multiplayer, the feature becomes even more interesting. While part of the group continues farming or exploring, others can already sort resources, build structures or craft equipment back at the base. This naturally creates teamwork without forcing players to constantly coordinate every small task.
Crossplay between PC and Xbox confirmed
For many players, crossplay will probably be one of the biggest features. In Subnautica 2, players on PC and Xbox can play together. That makes it much easier to start a shared world without worrying about platforms first.

Subnautica 2 currently also features predefined characters with different abilities. Because of that, different roles automatically emerge inside co-op groups. According to Unknown Worlds, additional options are expected to arrive later during Early Access.
Multiplayer remains completely optional in Subnautica 2
Despite the stronger co-op focus, you can still play Subnautica 2 entirely on your own. Unknown Worlds never forces you to bring other players along. That means you can still explore the deep ocean solo and slowly learn how the world works at your own pace. And if the ocean eventually becomes too uncomfortable alone, you can always invite friends later.
