Asobo Studio and Focus Entertainment are sending you back into the dark world of A Plague Tale in late August. In the spin-off Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, you play as Sophia, a plunderer on the run who must uncover the origins of the Macula on the mysterious Island of the Minotaur. I’ve already had the chance to play the game ahead of its release and have put together all the key details on its release and gameplay.

When and on which platforms will Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy be released?

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy launches on August 27, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. The game is available to preorder now. There’s particularly good news for Game Pass subscribers: The title will be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one and also supports Xbox Play Anywhere. As things stand, there is no early access period tied to more expensive editions. Everyone gets to start playing on the same day.

How much does Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy cost?

If you buy Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy digitally via Steam or the Epic Games Store, the Standard Edition will set you back just under $50. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S console versions cost $10 more. Focus Entertainment is also offering a physical “Exclusive Collector Box,” although it does not actually include the game.

Is there a preload for Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy?

Neither Focus Entertainment nor Asobo Studio have announced official preload dates yet. For a game of this scale, however, a preload on consoles seems fairly likely. PlayStation and Xbox typically allow preorder customers to download games a few days before launch. As soon as specific dates are confirmed, you’ll find them here.

There are no official details on the download size yet either. Given the game’s highly detailed environments, however, you may want to make sure you have plenty of storage space available. A day-one patch, as with most modern releases, cannot be ruled out either.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy – What can you expect from the game?

The story takes place 15 years before the events of A Plague Tale: Requiem. What begins as an ambitious heist ends in disaster for Sophia and the gang once led by her late father. Forced to flee Venice, she eventually finds herself on the Island of the Minotaur and in a forgotten world filled with the ruins of ancient civilizations. Her only companions are her confidante Leni and a notebook that serves as a guide through the mysterious world.

Resonance aims to combine the dark atmosphere of its predecessors with new gameplay elements. Sophia is agile and versatile in combat: You can use combo attacks, dagger strikes, parries, and kicks to take down enemies. Puzzles also play a major role. Using a stolen Minoan orb, you manipulate light to activate mechanisms that Daedalus once wove into the island itself.

One particularly intriguing twist is the switch between two different time periods: Sophia’s medieval present and the ancient Minoan era. The two are connected by the fates of two heroes and the legacy of the Macula. A restless presence also lurks in the shadows of the island, relentlessly hunting you down.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy at Gamescom

If you don’t want to wait until release, Gamescom 2026 will give you the chance to play Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy for yourself. The game will be playable at both the Focus Entertainment booth and the Xbox booth, giving you a great opportunity to get an early feel for its atmosphere and combat system. I’ll be there too, by the way, so feel free to stop by for a chat.

If you can’t make the trip to Cologne, a series of videos should help make the wait a little easier. Asobo Studio and Focus Entertainment are releasing several in-depth videos leading up to launch, each focusing on a different aspect of the game. Topics include the environments stretching from Venice to the Island of the Minotaur, the light mechanic at the heart of the gameplay, the various enemy types, Sophia’s backstory, and a detailed look at her combat system. More videos are expected to follow.

My take on Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy

With Resonance, Asobo Studio seems to be taking the series in the right direction. Both previous Plague Tale games placed a strong emphasis on their story and the relationship between the de Rune siblings. Their emotional journey resonated with plenty of fans, but from a gameplay perspective, the heavy focus on stealth and relatively simple puzzles didn’t always hit the mark. The formula was starting to run out of steam, particularly in the second game.

Sophia now brings some much-needed fresh air to the series, both narratively and in terms of gameplay. The plunderer is considerably more agile and battle-hardened than the young Amicia, which should appeal especially to players looking for more action. Visually, Asobo also appears to be firing on all cylinders again. Both the characters and environments I’ve seen so far are absolutely gorgeous. Whether the mix of action and puzzle sequences can remain compelling throughout the entire game — I’m expecting roughly the same length as A Plague Tale: Requiem — is something I’ll cover in my review, which is currently expected to go live during release week.
