An electric camper van, sprawling natural landscapes, and plenty of blueprints: Outbound from Square Glade Games combines cozy-game elements with survival mechanics and an open world. Even before launch, the indie project has generated major interest, including more than one million wishlists. Here’s a full breakdown of the release, demo, and gameplay details.
Outbound Release: When Does the Game Launch?
Outbound has been available since May 11, 2026 for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. A playable demo is already available on Steam, giving players an early look at the game while also allowing direct feedback for future improvements.

What Kind of Game Is Outbound?
Outbound is a relaxed open-world exploration game. You travel through a nature reserve in an electric camper van, either solo or with up to three additional players. Your van serves as a mobile home, workshop, and base camp. Rather than focusing on combat or time pressure, the game centers around peaceful exploration and gradually upgrading your vehicle.

There are no traditional enemies. However, falling from heights causes damage, forcing you to recover through sleep. Hunger also plays a role, though early on it can easily be managed with berries and mushrooms.
Gameplay: Explore, Gather, and Upgrade
The core gameplay loop revolves around exploration, resource gathering, and upgrades. You collect logs, metal sheets, and trash scattered throughout the world. A recycler converts garbage into vouchers, which can then be used at radio towers to unlock new blueprints. These include tools like saws as well as upgrades for your van, such as windows, cabinets, flower pots, solar panels, and wind turbines.
At the workbench located in your trunk, you can craft tools and upgrades once you’ve discovered the right blueprints. The roof of your van can also be expanded into a mobile living space complete with features like a greenhouse, barbecue area, or lounge deck.
Farming is also possible later in the game. You’ll eventually be able to plant garden beds and grow your own vegetables. Decorative items like bobbleheads and rubber ducks can also be unlocked.
Power Supply and Progression
Since you’re driving an electric vehicle, energy management plays a major role. Early on, a bio-burner powers the engine by burning wood or plant fibers. Later, solar panels and small wind turbines provide sustainable energy depending on weather conditions.
A status display keeps track of hunger, health, and your current battery charge. You’ll also occasionally discover charging stations throughout the world. Upgrades improve your camper’s engine performance and carrying capacity over time.
Co-Op Mode and Your Animal Companion
Outbound can be played solo or in co-op. Up to four players can explore the world together. The beta version also introduced a dog companion who rides in the passenger seat, can be pet, and even helps with exploration and carrying items back to the van.
World Design and Beta Content
The early-access version has already been expanded with new content, including a coastal biome filled with beaches, palm trees, and redwood forests. A notebook tracks everything you discover. Some terminals no longer unlock blueprints immediately, meaning you’ll now need to find clues or items like USB drives before activating them.
The game intentionally embraces a slower pace. The goal isn’t to rush toward objectives, but rather to explore at your own speed, upgrade your van, and uncover new blueprints along the way.

The recommended specs include 8 GB RAM, an RTX 3060 or RX 7600 XT, and Windows 11 (64-bit). According to its age rating, Outbound is suitable for players ages 6 and up. Pricing has not yet been announced.
