The preload date for GTA VI is set. In this article, I’ll tell you when you can start playing and what we know about the download size.
You’ll have plenty of time to download GTA VI before launch. Rockstar lists the preload start as “local midnight” on November 12, 2026. That means midnight in the time zone tied to your store account. And no, changing your console’s time zone won’t help. Rockstar is basing this on your store region, not your system settings.
GTA VI: Preload Also Possible With Physical Editions
Anyone who preordered digitally can preload the game. Physical edition buyers can, too, but they’ll need their download code first. Let that sink in for a moment: Rockstar is selling a physical version of GTA VI, and instead of a disc, the box only contains a download code printed on a slip of paper.
Anyone hoping to resell or lend out the game later has a problem, because once the code is redeemed, it’s worthless. At least the boxes are supposed to ship and be available at retail starting November 12, so those buyers can use the preload as well. There is no physical Ultimate Edition. Upgrading is digital only.
One detail that’s easy to miss: PlayStation codes are region-specific. If you buy a boxed copy abroad and use a German PSN account, you could run into activation issues. According to Rockstar, that restriction does not apply to Xbox codes.
Unlocks on November 19 at Midnight
You can start playing GTA VI at 12:00 a.m. CET on the night from November 18 to November 19. At least that’s what the PlayStation Store says. There is no early access for more expensive editions; Standard and Ultimate unlock at the same time. So if you see any version of GTA VI being offered with early access, don’t buy it. It’s definitely a scam.
What’s missing from the store listings is striking. Both platforms — PlayStation and Xbox — list GTA VI as a single-player-only title. There is no mention of an online mode. Whether and when a successor to GTA Online will arrive remains unclear. Rockstar has not said more for now.
PlayStation is also marketing the game as “PS5 Pro Enhanced.” Pro owners can look forward to higher resolution and a more stable frame rate. How this graphically ambitious game will run on the standard console remains a question mark, and only reviews shortly before launch will give us a clear answer.
GTA 6: Nobody Knows Anything Concrete About the Download Size
Rockstar has not revealed an official download size yet. Claims ranging from 200 to 676 GB are floating around online, but none of them are reliable. 676 GB obviously sounds completely absurd, but even 200 GB would be a lot. The fact that Rockstar is opening the preload a full week before launch at least suggests the download won’t exactly be small. You should also expect a day-one patch on release day.
