The Sleeper Temple in Chapter 5 of Gothic 1 Remake is the toughest area in the entire game. The quest “The Dreamer’s Nightmare” sends you deep into a sprawling temple complex where symbol puzzles, blood mechanics, platforming sections, and brutal boss fights are tightly intertwined. Your goal: defeat five Orc Shamans, collect their magical gemstones, and recover the legendary sword Uriziel.

Before You Enter the Sleeper Temple: Preparation Is Everything

The Sleeper Temple is long and unforgiving. Go in unprepared, and you’ll regret it fast. Bring as many healing potions as you can carry. Mana potions are important too if you rely on magic. Summoning scrolls, which you can buy from Xardas, are especially valuable, particularly Skeleton and Golem scrolls. Summoned creatures can tie up enemies in combat and give you the breathing room you need to solve puzzles without being constantly interrupted.

You’ll also want a reliable ranged option with plenty of ammo, whether that’s a bow, a crossbow, or a ranged rune. Several puzzles in the temple require precise shots at glyph plates on walls and above doorframes. Without ranged attacks, you simply won’t get any farther in those sections. Blunt weapons such as clubs and hammers are also especially effective against the many skeletons in the temple, so keep one ready.

Most importantly: save often, ideally before every new room and before every puzzle attempt. The temple is full of surprises, and some of them are lethal.

The Three-Statue Puzzle: Align the God Symbols Correctly

Right after entering the temple, you’ll arrive in the “Halls of the Sleeper” and have to take apart a few Skeleton Warriors and a Skeleton Mage. Once they’re down, take a moment to look around. Ignore the large gate and the three wheels for now and take the stairs down on the left side, just before the toppled pillar. At the end of the short tunnel, you’ll reach a room with a large statue.

  • Important: Make sure you pick up the temple map at the foot of the statue.

To the left of the entrance, a hard-to-spot passage leads farther down into the next room (careful: Skeleton Warrior), which contains three massive rotating statues. Two of them have clearly visible symbols on their bases that can be matched to the gods Beliar and Innos. The glyph on the third statue is damaged and can’t be identified.

The room also contains square pillars decorated with the same symbols. Your task: Rotate the two statues with clear symbols so that each points toward the pillar with the matching symbol. Aim the third statue with the damaged glyph at the remaining pillar, which has no clear symbol.

Once all three statues are correctly positioned, a stone pillar rises from the floor in the center of the room. On this pillar, you’ll see a combination of three symbols. Make sure you remember these symbols; ideally, take a screenshot or write them down. You’ll need them for the next puzzle.

The Rotating Disc Puzzle: Opening the First Gate

Return to the main hall with the symbol combination in mind. There, you’ll find three rotating discs on a pillar that let you set symbols. To move them, turn the three wooden wheels opposite the pillar. Set each wheel to exactly the symbol you saw on the raised pillar in the statue room.

If the combination is correct, the right-hand gate in the hall opens. However, enemies are waiting right behind it, including a Skeleton Mage. Rush straight at him and take him out as quickly as possible. As long as he’s alive, he’ll keep summoning new skeletons that can overwhelm you. If possible, use a summoning scroll to bring backup into the fight.

First Shaman: Varrag Kasorg – Aligning the Ring Puzzle and Floor Plates

Once you’ve defeated the skeletons, take a look around the hall first. Ignore the switches and pillars for now; we’ll come back to them later. Instead, jump into the pit to the right. Kill the two Temple Minecrawlers. In the caves ahead, you’ll also run into several Temple Guards and Skeleton Warriors, so things are about to get rough.

At the end of the tunnel, climb up a small ledge, kill two more skeletons, and you’ll find yourself in front of a blue-glowing altar next to a warrior statue. There are two doors to the left of it. One of them leads up a set of stairs. Follow it and pick up the healing items along the corridor with the blue torches; you’ll need them soon.

You’ll reach a room with glowing blue flames on the walls. Here, you’ll find four rotating mechanisms that move a ring pattern on the floor. The wheel on the highest outer platform controls the inner ring of the pattern, while the three lower wheels each move one segment of the outer ring. A mural on the outer ring shows how the discs need to be aligned. Here’s what it looks like:

Turn the wheels until the floor pattern is fully and correctly assembled. Use the visible connecting lines and segment shapes as your guide.

Once the pattern is set correctly, the Orc Shaman Varrag Kasorg, the “Lightbringer,” appears. After the fight, you’ll receive the Lightbringer Stone and a useful magic rune. Pick everything up before moving on. After the fight, a gate opens that leads back to the main hall.

Second Shaman: Varrag Hashor – Main Hall

Varrag Hashor is easy to reach. In the main hall, go to the stairs left of the switches and look up. Above the gate is a yellow-glowing ornament. Shoot it with a ranged weapon, and the gate below will open. Behind it, you’ll face the shaman wielding the “Worldcleaver.”

Third Shaman: Varrag Unhilqt – Finding the Orc Lever for the Platform Puzzle

Once you’ve dealt with the skeletons, take a look around this hall as well. In front of you are three switches that move the pillars ahead of them. However, the one on the far right is missing a lever, the so-called “Orc Lever.” Go through the first passage immediately to the left of the entrance and hop into the pit.

Careful: In the cell block, each lever opens the opposite gate. So don’t accidentally release one of the imprisoned monsters. Follow the stairs, and you’ll reach a room with three chests. Alongside useful resources and scrolls, you’ll also find the Orc Lever.

Return to the main hall and insert the Orc Lever into the middle of the three mechanisms. When you pull a lever, the corresponding pillar rises all the way up and then slowly lowers again. Pull the left lever first and wait a brief moment until the left platform has dropped slightly. Then quickly pull the middle lever. Sprint up the stairs immediately and jump across the raised platforms before they sink again. The middle pillar drops a little faster than the left one, so timing matters here. Wait at the first pillar until it is just barely high enough to climb onto, then jump to the middle one and across to the third.

Follow the green flames around the corner (careful: Temple Guards) until you see a large gate with a red ornament on the right. Shoot this one with a ranged weapon as well to open the gate and face Varrag Unhilqt. He guards the “Timesplinter.” In his burial chamber in the back room, you’ll find a summoning scroll for a Golem. Leave Unhilqt’s quarters and keep going straight ahead.

The Blood Fountain Puzzle: Removing the Red Barrier

In the next large hall, a massive red magical barrier blocks the main path. To remove it, you’ll need to solve a multi-part puzzle in the two side rooms. The basic idea: blood must be channeled from both rooms into the central hall to activate a mechanism.

First Side Room

Enter the room to the right of the barrier first. Turn back toward the entrance door and shoot the red ornament above the doorframe with a ranged weapon. This opens a hidden grate on the side and reveals a lever. Pull the lever, which activates a blood fountain on the back wall of the room.

The blood now flows through channels in the floor to two rotating floor plates. Use the nearby rotating mechanisms to align both plates so that the blood flows toward the nearest wall, meaning toward the large skulls. If everything is set correctly, the stone faces in the walls will begin to bleed, and a third rotating mechanism will rise from the floor in the center of the room.

Now rotate this middle floor plate toward the doorway, then readjust the two original plates so the blood flows across the new plate out of the room and into the central hall.

Second Side Room

Save your game before entering this room. Large sections of the floor are covered in spikes that will kill you instantly if you take the wrong approach. Do not go too far into the room.

From the doorway, you can spot a red circle on the opposite back wall. Shoot it with a ranged weapon to temporarily deactivate the floor spikes. Now quickly run forward, turn back toward the entrance door, and shoot the red circle above the doorframe. This opens a grate on the side wall and reveals a lever. Pull the lever so blood from this room is also channeled into the central hall.

Defeating the Fire Demon and Opening the Barrier

Once blood from both side rooms flows into the central barrier room, a mechanism rises from the floor in the middle. At the same time, a Fire Demon is summoned. Save immediately and prepare for the fight.

The demon uses fire attacks with heavy area damage, so keep moving and use summoned creatures as a distraction if needed. Dodge its swings; it usually uses a left-right combo followed by a forward strike. After that, it usually spits fire downward onto the ground in front of itself. That’s your best opening! Run around the flames and hit it from behind with your strongest attacks. Once the Fire Demon is defeated, the red barrier disappears for good.

Fourth Shaman: Varrag Arushat – Draining the Lava

Behind the former barrier, you’ll first run into more Temple Guards, then reach a room with three doors. Take the left door and follow the corridor down the stairs until you come to a narrow stone bridge with lava flowing through a channel system beneath it.

Jump down to the right of the bridge and follow the path. The other direction leads to the powerful two-hander “Hero’s Blade”. This path takes you into a room with a massive machine. A lever sticks out of the machine. Interact with it and turn it to lower the lava level in the temple. Keep turning until the lava has fully drained away.

Draining the lava reveals a new path that was previously hidden beneath the molten rock. Follow it downward and, after the stairs, climb up the rock ledge on the right. Open the portcullis with the crank on the wall, but first head in the opposite direction and go up the stairs.

Up there, you’ll reach several rooms across two floors containing chests and loot. Once you get to the very top, you’ll find a crank to the right of the narrow bridge that opens the large portcullis one floor below. The newly opened path leads you to Varrag Arushat, the guardian of the Banstone.

Fifth Shaman: Varrag Ruuushk and Finding the Sword Uriziel

The fifth and final shaman, Varrag Ruuushk (the “Fiendeye”), is located even deeper in the temple. You reach him through the large blue gate near the barrier at the blood fountain.

The path to Varrag Ruuushk leads along the inside of a volcano. Along the way, you’ll find several caves on the right side where you must defeat three Demon Lords. Only once their spirits are bound into the archway in front of Varrag Ruuushk’s platform does a spectral bridge to the final temple guardian manifest. The demons fight just like the first Fire Demon at the blood barrier. Once you’ve defeated Varrag Ruuushk, you can take the “Strange Sword,” which later turns out to be “Uriziel.”

  • Tip: Before you leave the temple, make sure you also grab the Demon Bow (guide)

Back to Xardas: Completing the Quest

With all five stones and the sword Uriziel in your inventory, your best option is to use the fast travel stone to Xardas’ Tower. Given the temple’s enemy density and traps, backtracking through it isn’t worth it. Talk to Xardas and hand over the five gemstones. This completes the quest “The Dreamer’s Nightmare” and means you’ve conquered the Sleeper Temple in Gothic 1 Remake.
