Four locations, four companions, and plenty of puzzles: This guide shows you how to safely collect all Focus Stones in Chapter 3 of Gothic 1 Remake.
The first half of Chapter 3 “The Artifacts of Ancient Power” in Gothic 1 Remake revolves almost entirely around one task: finding the Focus Stones. You cannot progress through the story without them, and the areas tied to them are among the more demanding sections of the game. To make everything work smoothly, you need not only the right routes, but also the right order. We guide you through the quest.
The Right Preparation for the Focus Stone Hunt
Before you set out at all, there is one key moment to take care of. After speaking with Diego and visiting Saturas, you are sent to a meeting behind the lighthouse. Your old friends are waiting there: Diego, Milten, Lester, and Gorn.
This meeting point is more than just story — it is the real starting point for the entire questline. If you visit one of the Focus areas before this, certain sequences may not continue correctly. That is why it is worth exhausting all the dialogue here first and only heading out afterward.
Once the meeting is over, you split up and can tackle the four Focus locations.
Finding Four Focus Stones: The Right Order and Map Locations
The order in which you track down the Focus Stones is technically up to you, but it makes a noticeable difference. If you follow a sensible route, the mechanics fit together better, the difficulty ramps up more logically, you are introduced to certain enemy types more naturally, and you get important tools exactly when you need them.
The most comfortable starting point is the Monastery Ruins. After that, head to Troll Gorge, then Stonehenge, and finally the Mountain Fortress. This order ensures that you get useful items early and can handle later areas much more comfortably.
Focus Stone 1: The Focus in the Monastery Ruins
Access to the Monastery
Gorn helps you with the first Focus Stone. Make sure your mana bar is full, and bring a few herbs or potions for regeneration. Light scrolls, torches, and healing items will not hurt either.
Meet Gorn in front of the Monastery Ruins and give the snappers hell. Follow him into the cave and — very important — open the chest in the pantry. Inside, you will find the “Transform into Meatbug” scroll.
Then return and head to the Monastery Ruins. To the left of the main gate, you will spot a small hole. To get through it, you need the transformation scroll you just found. As a meatbug, you can reach the inside of the ruins, which are full of snappers. Crawl into the courtyard and over to the gate where Gorn is waiting.

Now you need to be quick: Wait until the snappers are as far away from you as possible. Transform back and turn the wheel at the gate three times. Crawl under the gate before the snappers reach you. The gate is not open wide enough for Gorn to pass through yet, but you can now eliminate the snappers from a safe distance with ranged attacks. Then open the gate, and you can enter together with Gorn.

Defeating the Shadowbeast
From the gate, go right through the archway and follow the path across the ruins into a cave system — careful: snappers! At the end of the cave, you reach a pit where a giant shadowbeast is waiting for you. Jump into the pit, run to one of the stone pillars, and light the fire basket so you can see when the beast attacks.
- Tip: In one of the dark corners of the pit, you will find the one-handed sword “Deathbringer.”
Use the pillar as cover and wait until the shadowbeast has finished its attack sequence. Hit it once, then duck back behind the pillar. Keep moving the entire time and circle around the pillar so its claws cannot reach you. If you position yourself well, you can land a few strikes without getting hit. After that, the way to the Focus Stone is clear.

- Careful: A young troll attacks you on your way out of the Monastery Ruins. If you reach the courtyard and hear a noise, immediately sprint out through the gate to Gorn. With a little luck, this will cause the troll to freeze in place, and you can take it down safely from a distance with ranged weapons while Gorn handles the melee fight.

Focus Stone 2: Troll Canyon
How to Defeat the Old Troll
Milten is waiting for you at Troll Canyon. You need three troll hides so Milten can craft a scroll that shrinks the gigantic troll. There is no other way to defeat the monster.

Lure the troll to the cave where Milten is waiting, then run around the outside left of the ruins in the square and collect the troll hides by the graves.
- Careful: Hurry! The goblin warriors are numerous, fast, and can pelt you hard with stones even from a distance.

With Milten’s rune, you can finally shrink the troll and finish it off fairly easily.
Reaching the Focus Stone
After the fight, go to the main gate and open it with the two levers. In the cave behind it, keep right at the fork first and grab the “Telekinesis” scroll from the chest.
Then follow the other path that leads you to the Focus Stone. Before that, however, you still need to kill a few harpies. Lure them into the cave so they have to come down to the ground. That makes them easier to hit.

The bridge to the Focus Stone is broken — now it is time to use the Telekinesis scroll. Aim it at the blue ore crystals on the opposite side and pull the stones toward you until the bridge is whole again. Then bring the Focus Stone back to Saturas.
Focus Stone 3: Stonehenge
The third Focus Stone is buried beneath Stonehenge. Important: You absolutely need a ranged weapon, meaning arrows or magic, with enough ammunition or mana.
Follow Diego to the four pillars and light them with a torch. This opens a crypt. Inside, a brutally tough zombie awaits, and you will not bring it down with weapon attacks.

Instead, activate the three blue ornaments on the walls with an arrow or magic attack to trigger an energy wave in the center of the arena.
- Careful: Before you activate the third ornament, you need to lure the undead into the center so the energy blast actually hits it.
Always watch out for the skeleton warriors. Diego can keep some of them busy while you shoot the ornaments, but one of them can always slip through and surprise you from behind.

Focus Stone 4: The Book Puzzle in the Stone Fortress
To finish things off, Lester is waiting for you at the Stone Fortress. A huge stone golem is already waiting at the entrance, and you can only kill it with a blunt weapon. Dodge its slow but devastating swings and attack between its strikes. When it stomps its foot, it triggers a shockwave — dodge to the side.

The Stone Fortress is crawling with harpies, so prepare for several fights. Once you finally reach the library, the room with the dissected scavenger in the middle, a small puzzle awaits. To open the secret door behind the fireplace, you need to pull the books from the three wall shelves in the correct order.
- Note: If you pull the wrong book, you will hear a cackle. The right book is confirmed with a click.
The correct order is: right, middle, right, left, middle, based on the viewing angle shown in the screenshot.

Collect the items in the alchemy lab and the chests inside, then take the stairs upward. They lead to the open attic, from where you can see the Focus Stone. Pick it up and bring it to Saturas. Once you have delivered the final Focus Stone, he sends you to Cronos and Riordian. There, you receive a hefty seven potions as a reward, which you definitely should not forget.
