In the Colony, you need a bed of your own. Otherwise, things can get uncomfortable fast. We show you every safe place to sleep and explain why the sleep system is more important than you might think.

Sleeping in Gothic 1 Remake doesn’t just let you skip the night — it also helps you recover. But if you crawl into the wrong bed, you can get yourself into serious trouble. To make sure you don’t wake up next to an angry NPC with a bloody head, here are a few tips on how the sleep system works.

Why sleeping matters in Gothic 1 Remake

Skip the day-night cycle

There is no wait function outside of beds. If you want to fast-forward time — and you’ll need to do that more often than you might like — you need a safe place to sleep.

At night, it gets pitch-black, monsters become more aggressive, and most NPCs are nowhere to be found. Merchants are asleep. Quest givers are asleep. If you want to get things done, sleep until morning.

Healing has a limit

Sleeping restores mana and health, but not endlessly. Each in-game day, you get 8 hours of restful sleep. After that, healing stops. Every hour you sleep is deducted from that allowance. Once those 8 hours are used up, you can still skip time, but you won’t heal anymore.

Your rest allowance only refills while you’re awake. For every 3 hours spent awake, you regain 1 hour of sleep credit. So plan carefully when you sleep. Simply snoozing through three days in a row won’t help.

Other people’s beds mean trouble

Beds marked with a red icon belong to NPCs. If you lie down in one anyway, you’ll be rudely woken after about an hour. Try it again, and things can get ugly. That can mean anything from a beating to a loss of reputation. It’s best to use only free beds. We’ll show you where to find them in the sections below.

Gothic 1 Remake: Where to find free beds in the three camps

Your own bed in the Old Camp

Right at the start, you should talk to Guy. He’s in the Old Camp and offers you a small hut above the arena for free. You’ll recognize it by the distinctive red cloths hanging over the entrance. There’s also a large grill area in front of the hut.

Inside the hut, you’ll find a bed, a juicy ham, and a storage chest. The latter doesn’t really do much for you after you take out the old recipe, since Gothic has no inventory limits. Still, the recipe at least lets you start a quest with Snaf the cook.

If you can’t find Guy’s hut right away: There’s another free bed in the smithing area. Just head to the ladder by the upper level, where you’ll see two beds. One of them doesn’t belong to anyone.

Later in the game, Mordrag’s sleeping spot also becomes available. At first, he camps in the castle courtyard near Gomez’s castle. Once you deal with Mordrag as part of the quest about joining the Old Camp, his cot is yours.

New Camp: Take over Shrike’s bed

In the New Camp, nobody gives you anything for free. Talk to Gorn and ask about a place to stay. You’ll find him by keeping right from the entrance. When you ask, he sends you to Shrike, a thug who is currently occupying a hut. Your job: throw him out.

Careful: Knock him out, but don’t kill him. If you kill Shrike, that’s it for both the quest and the sleeping spot. Once you’ve knocked him down, you can loot him. Talk to him afterward — if that doesn’t work right away, come back later — and ask if he’s had enough. After that, he’ll hand the hut over to you. This is the only free place to sleep in the New Camp.

Swamp Camp: Sleeping under the stars

The Brotherhood’s Swamp Camp has several free places to sleep. The first bedroll is up by the alchemy hut. Follow the wooden walkways with the flask signposts into the second ring, cross the suspension bridge, and then keep climbing the ladders. At the highest point, you’ll find a free bedroll under the open sky.

The second bedroll is right by the temple forecourt, beneath the wooden structures on the left side. If you’d rather sleep in a hut, you’ll find one across from the swampweed mashers. The left hut behind the novice with the water pipe is yours to use freely.

There’s also a place to sleep shortly before you reach the Swamp Camp. Keep an eye out for a cave along the rock wall on the left. Inside, you can make yourself comfortable.
