Gothic 1 Remake is uncompromising and clunky but dense with atmosphere. Alkimia Interactive stays remarkably faithful to the original and in doing so, risks alienating plenty of newcomers. We’ve put nearly 30 hours into the game so far for our preliminary review.
Alkimia Interactive is taking on material that, for many players, is more than just a game. Gothic has earned cult status precisely because of its harshness and refusal to smooth out the edges. The remake carries over that DNA almost unchanged, creating moments you rarely find in games today. At the same time, it makes clear that some design decisions have not survived the test of time. Gothic 1 Remake does not meet you halfway. It demands attention, patience, and a high tolerance for frustration.
Those willing to embrace it will find a dense, atmospheric RPG world that makes many modern games look weak by comparison when it comes to consistency and consequence. At the same time, its weaknesses feel hard to ignore in 2026. Chief among them are the undercooked combat system and the rigid save model. This almost overly faithful take on the original could keep Gothic 1 Remake from reaching a broad and especially new audience. For some, it will feel like a return to supposedly better times. For others, it remains a fascinating but unnecessarily cumbersome relic.
Rating
- Important note: I’ve spent around 30 hours with Gothic 1 Remake so far. I’ll add a final score once I’ve finished the game.
My current rating estimate is:
- 2.5 out of 5
Preliminary verdict: An atmospherically strong remake with an uncompromising direction, held back noticeably by its combat system and lack of quality-of-life features.
