Mud is back — and every bit as unbearable as he was 20 years ago. Anyone who played the original Gothic knows the deal: this guy is a walking test of patience.
In Gothic 1 Remake, the digger Mud starts getting on your nerves within minutes. This clingy nuisance hangs out in the northern part of the Old Camp, between the North Gate and the arena. If you follow Diego at the start, you’ll walk practically right past him. He’s sitting near Snaf, who is standing by his cooking pot. As soon as you get close to Mud, he starts talking to you. No matter what you say, Mud will be glued to your heels from that moment on. Welcome to hell.
Who Is Mud, and What’s His Deal?
Mud talks. Constantly. Without pause. Even when you’re in your inventory, haggling with a merchant, or stuck in the middle of a fight — this guy always finds the perfect moment to yap at you.

You can talk to Mud and tell him to get lost, but unfortunately, that doesn’t do anything. He keeps following you around and comments on your every move. Mud is useless as a companion outside the camp, too, because with his club, he’s more likely to hurt himself than anything else. Even worse: He gets in the way, interrupts important conversations, and generally turns himself into an absolute pain.
The best part — or worst, depending on how you look at it: Mud has no impact on any quest whatsoever. The developers only put him in for fun, purely to annoy you. Mission accomplished, I’d say.
How to Get Rid of Mud and Unlock the “Mud Freak” Trophy
There are several ways to deal with Mud. None of them are exactly nice, but at least they work. You can simply drag Mud into a fight outside the camp and let some beast take care of him. Or you can kill him yourself and pick up a few extra XP in the process. There are no consequences to worry about, since Mud is technically irrelevant.
- But be warned: If you want the “Mud Freak” trophy, you’ll need to handle things differently.
Mud has 24 unique lines of dialogue in total, and you’ll have to suffer through every single one of them if you want the “Mud Freak” trophy. Your achievement list shows a running counter, such as “Mud dialogue 9/24.” Some of his lines only trigger after you’ve spoken to specific NPCs first. That means you’ll need to drag him around with you for a while and talk to various people in the camp.

Let Mud talk for now until the counter reaches 21 out of 24. After that, talk to him yourself and choose the options “Get lost!” and “Can you shut up for once?” These two lines also count as dialogue and bring your total up to 23.
Now comes the final step: Take him outside the walls and smack him around a little without killing him. He’ll run away, come back later, and complain at you. That’s dialogue number 24. The trophy pops immediately afterward.
After that, you can do whatever you want with him. Chase him off, kill him, ignore him — it doesn’t matter. You have the trophy, and there’s nothing more you can get out of Mud.
What Happens If Mud Makes It to Chapter 4
If you keep Mud by your side until Chapter 4 of Gothic 1 Remake, a small side quest involving him opens up. Mud is angry with you because, thanks to your actions, nobody likes him anymore. Talk to him about the Swamp Camp, then suggest a trip to the Orc Cemetery in the next conversation.
On the way there, you’ll hear a few more of Mud’s monologues, but they no longer matter for the trophy. Mud stays at the site and listens to Baal Tondral’s sermon. If you return later, Mud will tell you what happened to him. If you missed the quest, you can watch the full sequence here.
