Can’t defeat the Minecrawler Queen in Gothic 1 Remake? No problem – our boss guide walks you through this frustrating fight.
The Minecrawler Queen is waiting for you in Gothic 1 Remake in Chapter 2, at the end of the Old Mine behind a locked iron gate. Honestly, the Minecrawler Queen made me look pretty bad on my first attempt. Anyone who thinks they can just stroll in and start swinging is in for a nasty surprise. But don’t worry – with a few tricks, you can bring this beast down.
How to Prepare for the Minecrawler Queen
On my first attempt, I went down there completely unprepared and tried to kill the giant monster with melee attacks – big mistake. The Minecrawler Queen barely moves, but if she catches you with her claws, half your health bar is gone.
Here’s how to prepare for the boss fight:
- The right weapons: Two-handed weapons work great, and so does powerful magic like fire, which you can get from Torrez in the Old Camp. What matters most is dealing enough damage. At first, I flailed around with a one-handed Guard’s Blade and barely scratched her. So pick a weapon that deals at least 70 damage, or this is going to be a very, very long night.
- Stock up on healing potions: Bring more than you think you’ll need. I only had three potions the first time – nowhere near enough. Before Cor Kalom sends you into the mine, he offers you either light magic or healing potions. Definitely take the potions. Before the fight, make another loop through the forest and hunt a few beasts. Cook the meat, pick up your rations from Snaf in the Old Camp, and maybe buy a few extra healing potions or healing herbs if you have enough ore.
- Don’t forget light: The breeding chamber is pitch-black. Without a torch or light magic, you’ll be stumbling around in the dark. You’ll find plenty of torches at the Old Camp exit and at the entrance to the mine.
- Practice dodging: If you still aren’t confident with dodging, turn back. Practice the timing until you can do it blindfolded. Otherwise, you won’t stand a chance against the Queen’s spit attack and claw swipes.
A few more general combat tips: Heal early and often. Don’t wait until you’re almost dead – a single hit can be enough to end the fight. And don’t celebrate too soon once the Queen goes down, because there’s a second phase. Stay focused and don’t let up, even if the fight drags on.
Phase 1 Against the Minecrawler Queen: Rhythm Is Everything
In melee, the rule is simple: hit and run. Run toward the Queen and memorize this rhythm:
- Dodge the spit attack
- Dodge the swipe from the right
- Dodge the spit attack
- Attack
Wait until the Queen has finished her three-hit combo, land one strong hit, and immediately back off again. Repeat this until she goes down. I kept circling in front of the Queen from right to left, dodging three times along the way, which put me back in front of her at just the right moment after her combo ended.
- Important: Keep an eye on the small minecrawlers scuttling around the cave. Nothing is more annoying than getting killed by one of those bugs right before victory.
If you’re comfortable with bows or magic, you can also fight from range in this phase and only worry about dodging the spit attack. Fireballs are extremely effective, but they consume a lot of mana. Bring enough resources to refill your mana if you’re playing as a ranged fighter. If you’re using bows, make sure you have enough arrows – this fight can take a while.
No matter how you fight, keep moving. That said, I recommend melee for this phase. The farther away you are, the more often the Queen spits, and dodging in the narrow corridor can get very tricky.
Phase 2: Keep Your Distance and Defeat the Minecrawler Queen Safely
Unlike the original, the remake adds a second phase. For this one, I strongly recommend keeping your distance. The Minecrawler Queen is much more agile now, and dodging her melee attacks is practically impossible. Put away your sword or axe and switch to a bow, crossbow, or magic.
Fire off a big volley right at the start – preferably fire magic – and immediately retreat into the corridor. Again, watch out for the small minecrawlers scuttling around you. The Queen will chase you at first, but she’ll quickly break off. Follow her back into the arena, start firing again, and retreat as soon as she runs toward you. Repeat this until she finally gives up the ghost.
After that, collect the minecrawler eggs and return to the Swamp Camp to complete the quest.
