Teleport runes are your most important shortcut in Gothic 1 Remake. We’ll show you how fast travel works and when you unlock it.

Early on, you’ll spend a lot of time crossing the Valley of Mines on foot. The routes between the Old Camp, the Swamp Camp, and the New Camp in particular can quickly test your patience. Gothic 1 Remake does give you a proper fast travel system later on, but until then, you’ll have to make do with other options.

Early Alternative: A Mount Instead of Teleporting

Since fast travel is tied to your main quest progress, you’ll have to get through the first few hours without that convenience. There is, however, a way to travel from A to B more quickly fairly early in the game: a mount.

In the remake, you can tame and ride a Scavenger. This works through an optional quest from the NPC Cohsel west of the Old Camp. You’ll need to gather specific plants and materials, which Cohsel then uses to craft a saddle and a bell that lets you call a tamed Scavenger.

Teleport Runes: How Fast Travel Works in Gothic 1 Remake

The game’s actual fast travel system is built around so-called teleport runes. These are magical items that you use just like regular spell runes.

Once you have a rune, simply place it in your quickbar, activate it, and spend mana to instantly teleport to the corresponding location. Each rune is tied to a fixed destination.

When You Get the First Teleport Runes

You won’t unlock the first teleport rune until fairly late—at the start of Chapter 3. Before that, you need to complete the main quest surrounding the Orc Cemetery.

You’ll receive the most important runes as the story progresses:

  • Teleport to the Swamp Camp: You receive this directly from Cor Angar at the start of Chapter 3, after completing Chapter 2.
  • Teleport to the Water Mages in the New Camp: You receive this in Chapter 3 during the quest “The Water Mages’ Plan.” Diego sends you to the mage Saturas, who is located in the rear section of the cave in the New Camp. From the entrance, keep heading right until you reach the guards, then tell them you are expected. Saturas hands you the rune at the end of the conversation.
  • Teleport to the Fire Mages in the Old Camp: Ironically, the rune for the Old Camp is the one that takes the longest to get. You won’t receive it until Chapter 5, when you reach Xardas’ sunken tower.
