Climbing is one of the new movement abilities in Gothic 1 Remake, opening up entirely new paths. I’ll show you how to unlock the skill early and use it effectively.

Unlike the original, the remake introduces new traversal mechanics. Climbing gives you far more freedom of movement, especially early in the game, and improves your chances of finding valuable loot. Many locations can be reached faster this way, and some rewards are only accessible through this mechanic. But first, you need to learn the skill — I’ll explain how.

How to Unlock Climbing

You learn climbing in the Swamp Camp. After entering, keep left and enter the temple courtyard. On the right side of the courtyard, where the sect members gather, you will see a hole in the wall. Go through it and head down to the beach. There, you will meet Theron. Go through all dialogue options with him, and he will offer to teach you.

Before Theron teaches you climbing, however, he asks for something in return: You need to bring him six units of Northern Dark. The easiest way to get them is right inside the Swamp Camp.

Go to the merchant Fortuno, to the right of the alchemy tower. He offers you a free daily ration. With a little patience, you can get the required amount for free. Of course, you can also buy it from him if you have enough ore. Once you have brought Theron the goods, you can unlock the skill for 5 learning points.

  • Note: You can find out where to sleep for free in the Swamp Camp to pass the time in our bed guide for Gothic 1 Remake.

How Climbing Works in the Remake

The climbing system in Gothic 1 Remake is simple: Move up to a wall, press the corresponding action button, and climb upward. However, you cannot climb just any wall. There are designated climbing points in the game, and they are relatively rare. You can recognize them by their slightly ridged surface, as shown in the screenshot.

These climbing points often serve as alternate paths or hidden routes. There is no separate stamina system for climbing. Once you are hanging on a rock wall, you will not fall simply because your strength runs out.

Right after training, you can try out the skill immediately by following Theron to his lookout point. One especially worthwhile detour is the black goblins’ cave. Here, you can farm plenty of ore (guide) and reach a few loot spots that would otherwise be inaccessible. You will also find alternate routes via climbing passages in the Mountain Fortress in Chapter 3 (walkthrough), which can save you fights or detours.
