The path to Xardas is one of the tougher sections in Gothic 1 Remake. This guide shows you exactly where to find the tower, how to get there, and how to defeat the three golems.
Once Saturas sends you off after the events surrounding the Fire Mages, Chapter 4 begins one of the key quests in the later stages of Gothic 1 Remake — but don’t worry, this walkthrough will help you overcome this challenge, too. Your target is the mage Xardas, who is hiding deep in orc territory inside his tower. Getting there is no simple stroll, because before you are even allowed inside, you must pass a special trial.
Gothic 1 Remake Chapter 4 Walkthrough: How to Find Xardas’ Tower
- Important: You cannot reach the tower without the climbing ability. Our guide explains how to learn climbing in Gothic 1 Remake.
Xardas’ tower is located in a remote area south of the Old Camp. A reliable route takes you from the Old Camp toward the ore region. Follow the path and keep heading toward the still-unexplored areas of the map.
You can see the tower’s exact location here:

Once you push deeper into the area, you can spot the tower from a distance. Finding the tower is easier than actually reaching it. The path is crawling with monsters, so your best bet is to grab the mount (guide) and slalom past the ill-tempered beasts.

To reach the entrance, stay to the right of the lake and follow the mountainside. Continue along the path until you reach a rock wall you can climb — you need the climbing ability for this.
Once you reach the top, a small bridge crosses the lava flow and leads to the tower’s rear entrance. Inside, however, the next task is already waiting for you.
In the tower, you first meet a demon who blocks your access. He gives you a clear task: You must bring him three hearts taken from a fire golem, a stone golem, and an ice golem. Only after you have defeated all three will the way farther up open.
The good news: All three golems are located right near the tower.
The bad news: The golems are no joke.
Locations of the Three Golems
The stone golem is the easiest to find. Leave the tower and follow the path up on the left. You cannot miss it.
The ice golem is a little more hidden. On your way back from the stone golem, keep right and head up the slope. This path takes you into a colder area and to the ice golem’s cave. At the forks, keep left twice. You can loot a few things on the right each time, but expect trouble. You will find the golem inside the cave.
The fire golem is on the path that led you to the tower. So head back toward the tower, cross the bridge over the lava flow, and then continue left until you reach a cave.

The Right Preparation
The three golems follow one shared basic rule: Normal weapons do not work. For melee combat, you need a blunt weapon, such as a club or hammer. A high Strength value of at least 35 is mandatory. You should also know how to dodge-roll.
Also important: Lots of healing items. Bring as many as you can carry, because the golems deal serious damage if they hit you.
If you are focused on magic, try the Shadowbeast scroll, which you can buy from the Water Mage Chronos in the New Camp. This will help you bring down the stone golem. For the fire and ice golems, opposing spells help — for example, fireballs against the ice golem. If you continue right before the ice golem’s cave, you will find one near a large skeleton under a tree.
Otherwise, I recommend buying Strength rings or Strength amulets from merchants to temporarily boost your Strength stat and then going into melee combat as well.
How to Defeat the Golems in Melee Combat
In combat, the golems are dangerous but predictable. Their attacks are easy to read, which makes dodging much easier. If you keep your distance and strike again at the right moment, it is only a matter of time before the golem falls. Take your time, watch their movements, and use short attack windows instead of constantly applying pressure.
The best order for the fights is:
- Fire golem
- Stone golem
- Ice golem
The fire golem has the fewest attacks, while the ice golem has the most. Starting with the fire golem lets you gradually get used to the attack patterns.
Attacks and Openings
Every golem has an area attack and several melee attacks. Expect area damage when they raise a leg or an arm to stomp or slam the ground moments later. Jump to the side to avoid the wave of rubble that follows.
For the melee swings, it is best to dodge in the opposite direction of the strike. They usually swing from left to right and vice versa. After each attack combo, a small window opens for a quick counterattack.
The stone golem and ice golem also have ranged attacks. The former throws a boulder at you, which it lifts over its head shortly beforehand. The ice golem spits ice shortly after its mouth lights up. Mini-golems may also appear during this fight, making your life even harder.
Once you have internalized all attack patterns, circle the golem, dodge deliberately, and only attack during the opening after its attack combo. Stay patient and do not get too aggressive, and you will reliably bring down all the golems.
Gothic 1 Remake Chapter 4 Walkthrough: Return to the Tower and Reward
Once you have collected all three hearts, return to the demon in the tower. Give him the required items, and he will hand you a fast-travel teleport rune that takes you to Xardas.
The previously locked barrier also disappears, and after speaking with the mage, you can leave the tower without any trouble. Before you go, however, loot all of his chests. The powerful mage also becomes a merchant after the conversation.
