Starting at level 10, you can gather ore, gems, herbs, and Odyle in AION 2. Here’s how Essence Extraction works, which skills make a noticeable difference, and which Ruby you really need to advance to Professional.
In this guide, you’ll learn:
- when you can start gathering
- how success and failure work while gathering
- exactly what the Common and Specialty Skills do
- how to gather Odyle while flying
- why advancing to Professional is worth it and which Ruby you need
Essence Extraction is the gathering profession in AION 2. It progresses naturally while you complete quests and provides materials for crafting. Once you reach Novice Lv. 50, however, your progress stops until you find a specific Ruby. To make matters more confusing, that Ruby has a very similarly named counterpart.
Note: I wrote this guide during Advanced Access ahead of the October 5 release. It is based on my own gameplay footage and screenshots, which I used to advance Essence Extraction to Professional. Names and values may change with future updates.

How Essence Extraction Works in AION 2
You can identify gathering nodes in the world by the name displayed above them, such as “Ruby” or “Orichalcum”. Once you start gathering, a window with two gauges appears at the bottom center of the screen: Success and Failure. Fill the Success Gauge and you’ll receive the resource. If the Failure Gauge fills first, the extraction fails.

Your gathering level is displayed above the window, starting at “Novice Lv. 1.” This is completely separate from your character level. My Spiritmaster was level 12 while my gathering skill had already reached Novice Lv. 13. Successful attempts continue to raise your gathering level.
Once a node is depleted, the game tells you there is no Essence left to extract. Then it’s time to move on to the next one. You can check your gathering level and skills in the main menu under “Essence Extraction.”
Don’t confuse the two: Item Extraction is a separate system. That’s where you break down old gear, and it has nothing to do with gathering.
When Can You Start Gathering in AION 2?
You can start gathering at character level 10. I began around level 10 to 11, just after leaving Safe Haven for the first time as an Asmodian. It works the same way for Elyos once you leave your first hub. I gathered my first ore at the Dredgion Crash Site, only a few minutes after leaving the village.
Our advice: Gather everything you come across along your quest route right from the start. Your gathering level will rise naturally as you play. After around 25 minutes of questing, I had already reached Novice Lv. 14.
Which Resources Can You Gather in AION 2?
Essence Extraction has six categories: Ore, Gem, Log, Herb, Ingredient, and Odyle. Each has its own gathering nodes and Specialty Skill branch. During my playthrough, I gathered resources such as Orichalcum Ore, Fine Ruby Gemstone, Sapphire Gemstone, and three grades of Odyle: Odyle, Fine Odyle, and Pure Odyle.
Gathering Odyle: How to Do It While Flying
You can gather Odyle while flying without having to land first. The settings include an “Auto Flight During Odyle Extraction” option for this. With the Odyle Seeker skill, the game also displays Odyle locations on your compass and minimap.

Essence Extraction Skills: Common on the Left, Specialty on the Right
As your gathering level increases, you earn skill points. There are two types: Common Skill Points for the skills on the left and Specialty Skill Points for the branches on the right. Specialty Skill Points are rarer: At Novice Lv. 34, the game showed that I wouldn’t receive my next one until Novice Lv. 40. You spend your points through “Level Up” at the bottom right of the window. Above it, the game shows the required gathering level and number of points for the next skill level.
Common Skills: You’ll Notice the Difference Immediately
On the left are three skills that apply to every resource type. I noticed their effects very clearly while playing: Gathering becomes easier and your attempts succeed more reliably. The tooltips explain why.
Skill Effect Lv. 4 Lv. 5 Proficient Handling increases the Success Gauge gain with every successful roll by 20 by 25 Delicate Touch reduces the Failure Gauge gain with every failed roll by 32 by 40 Lady Luck once the Failure Gauge reaches 50%, has a chance to increase the Success Gauge by 2.5 times 20% chance 24% chance
That makes Lady Luck your safety net when an extraction attempt is already close to failing. As a Novice, these skills cap at Lv. 5 and display MAX. Going from Lv. 4 to Lv. 5 costs five Common Skill Points, while Lv. 6 requires you to advance to Professional first.

Our advice: Spend your Common Skill Points as soon as you get them. These skills apply to every type of resource, including everything you gather along your quest route.
Specialty Skills: More Resources and Better Quality
On the right, each category has its own branch with three skill nodes. Using Odyle as an example:
- Odyle Seeker: displays Odyle locations on the compass and minimap.
- Plentiful Harvest: after a successful Essence Extraction, you have a 10% chance to receive double the amount.
- Odyle Appraiser: after a successful Essence Extraction, there is a 10% chance to reselect the Odyle grade. If you already found higher-grade Odyle, the skill does not activate.
The skill nodes unlock one after another. In my case, I could only select Plentiful Harvest once Odyle Seeker had reached MAX. As a Novice, these skills cap at Lv. 1. Lv. 2 requires Professional and one Specialty Skill Point. Since these points are limited, focus on the resources you actually need instead of starting every branch. As a Novice, I fully unlocked the Odyle and Gem branches.

Novice 50, What Next? How to Advance to Professional in AION 2
At Novice Lv. 50, the bar is full and displays “Max.” From that point on, you no longer earn skill points. Advancing is therefore absolutely worth it: After reaching Professional, you can continue leveling, earn more points, and upgrade your skills beyond the Novice limits.
Once you reach Novice Lv. 50, the game automatically accepts the quest “[Upgrade] Essence Extraction Specialty Skill.” As an Asmodian, you need to speak to Alzirr, the Artisan Essence Extractor in Safe Haven. He stands right next to the Morph merchant. For Elyos, the global client data lists Korius in Verteron as your contact.

Alzirr’s task is simple: Bring him a Splendent Ruby (Bound) that can be obtained from Ruby. In other words, you can get the stone from regular Ruby gathering nodes. I found mine at the very first node I gathered in Calderon Canyon while my character was level 20. The quest data recommends level 45, but my character level did not affect whether I could obtain the Ruby.
Important: Don’t confuse the quest item with the Radiant Ruby Gemstone. Despite the similar names, the latter is a high-grade Jewelcrafting material and does not count for the quest. It appears as a separate recipe under Morph and requires Radiant Odyle and a higher Jewelcrafting level. The English client makes the distinction much clearer: The quest item is called Splendent Ruby, while the crafting material is the Radiant Ruby Gemstone.

According to the quest data, you can find Ruby at the following locations:
- Asmodians: Calderon Canyon, Dredgion Crash Site, Silent Hill, Nameless Cemetery, Tranein Highland
- Elyos: Verteron Fortress Ruins, Destroyed Abyss Gate, Ellun River Midstream, Kraka Footpath
I personally only gathered Ruby in Calderon Canyon. Once you have the stone, return to Alzirr. Your rewards are “Essence Extraction Upgrade: Professional” and “Artwork: Artisan Essence Extractor (Bound),” a decoration for your Pantheon. I didn’t have to use anything manually: After turning in the quest, my Essence Extraction rank immediately showed Professional.
What Changes at Professional?
Professional is the highest Essence Extraction rank and goes up to Professional Lv. 50. You start earning experience and skill points again. On the left, you can raise the Common Skills beyond Lv. 5, while the Specialty Skills on the right can be upgraded to Lv. 2.

Good luck gathering, and keep an eye out for the right Ruby!
