AION 2 launches globally with eight classes: Templar, Gladiator, Assassin, Ranger, Sorcerer, Spiritmaster, Cleric, and Chanter. This guide explains every class, its weapon and role, how beginner-friendly it is, and which class is best suited for solo play, groups, PvE, or PvP.

In this guide, you’ll learn:

  • which eight AION 2 classes are available at global launch and which weapons they use
  • which classes are best suited for beginners, solo play, groups, PvE, and PvP
  • what each class can do, with examples from its skill kit
  • which classes are most useful in dungeon groups
  • which classes lead the AION 2 rankings after release
  • whether you can change your class later

Choosing your class is one of the most important decisions you’ll make before starting AION 2. Your class is tied to your character, and there is currently no free class-change option. If you want to switch later, you’ll need to create another character. The good news: All eight launch classes are available to both factions, so you don’t have to choose between your preferred class and Elyos or Asmodian.

Quick answer: If you want a forgiving first character, start by looking at Templar, Ranger, or Cleric. Templar is the safest frontline option, Ranger offers straightforward ranged combat, and Cleric combines strong survivability with excellent group demand. For PvP burst, consider Assassin; for flexible melee combat, Gladiator; for AoE magic, Sorcerer; for pets and crowd control, Spiritmaster; and for hybrid support, Chanter.

We use the official English class names throughout this guide. For the Gladiator and Spiritmaster, the skill names have been matched to their English equivalents from the global client. The remaining class skills use their English client names as well. You can find all our other guides in our AION 2 guide hub with all tips and walkthroughs at a glance.

  • Note: This guide reflects the state of the game on October 8, 2026. It’s based on the Launch Scale Test, where I played a Spiritmaster to level 30, the global test client, my time in the global version since Advanced Access, and the in-game rankings on my server, Ereshkigal, from October 6. Stats and balance can change with every patch.

How Many Classes Are in AION 2?

AION 2 launches globally with eight classes: Templar, Gladiator, Assassin, Ranger, Sorcerer, Spiritmaster, Cleric, and Chanter. All eight are available to both Elyos and Asmodian characters.

The Beginner-Friendliness column is our assessment based on my time in the Launch Scale Test and in the global version. It does not rank endgame strength; it only reflects how forgiving a class feels during the first few hours. Opinions on the Gladiator vary widely, from easy to difficult, so we rate it as moderate.

What Is the Best AION 2 Class for Beginners?

If this is your first AION 2 character, start by looking at Templar, Ranger, or Cleric. Templar forgives mistakes through its defenses, Ranger lets you fight safely from range, and Cleric can heal itself while leveling. Cleric is mechanically accessible, although healing groups later comes with more responsibility.

You start with four character slots. If you’re unsure, try several classes before committing to a main character.

What Is the Best AION 2 Class for Solo Play?

For comfortable solo progression, Templar and Gladiator are particularly forgiving because both can survive prolonged fights without constantly relying on outside healing. The Spiritmaster is also a strong option if you enjoy managing a summon: its spirits can tank, restore resources, or add damage depending on the situation.

Which AION 2 Classes Are Best for Group Content?

If finding dungeon groups quickly matters most, Templar and Cleric are the safest choices because they fill the dedicated tank and healer roles. The Chanter is also highly valuable in organized groups thanks to its buffs and additional healing.

Melee Classes in AION 2: Templar, Gladiator, and Assassin

Templar: Tank and Safe Beginner Choice

The Templar is AION 2’s only pure tank. Armed with a Longsword and Shield, the class draws enemy attention, keeps bosses focused on itself, and absorbs damage that other classes wouldn’t survive. It’s considered one of the safest and most comfortable choices for leveling through the main story and can take plenty of punishment in PvP as well. If you like standing on the front line and leading the group, this is your class. Think Reinhardt from Overwatch, only with wings.

In combat, the Templar builds aggro through attacks, keeps bosses locked onto them with Taunt, and handles damage spikes with shield skills and defensive cooldowns. The class also buffs the party with Fury, increasing its damage.

Examples from the Templar’s kit:

  • Vicious Strike: basic attack that builds aggro
  • Taunt: forces the boss to focus on the Templar
  • Doom Shield: absorbs heavy incoming damage
  • Punishment: a powerful follow-up attack
  • Shield Rush: a shield charge that quickly closes the gap to an enemy

In the rankings from October 6, the Templar looks like the most versatile class: It shows up in the overall rankings for Nightmare, Transcendence and the arenas, and three Templars were among the top nine in the Arena of Cooperation. In Transcendence, only Gladiators, Assassins and Clerics had cleared stage 3 besides the Templar. In my tier list, it sits in A.

Good fit if you want forgiving leveling, enjoy taking responsibility for your group, and want to be difficult to bring down in PvP.

Gladiator: Melee DPS, Off-Tank, and Lifesteal

The Gladiator wields a Greatsword, hits multiple enemies at once, and can step in as an off-tank when needed. Some attacks restore a portion of their HP, giving the class plenty of staying power even without a healer.

The appeal lies in its combos. Many skills hit harder when the enemy is already knocked down or stunned. Mocking Blade knocks the enemy down, while Overhead Slam punishes exactly those targets. Once you internalize the right sequence, you’ll get significantly more out of the class. The Gladiator also has a party buff: After a successful block, Experienced Counterstrike increases the entire party’s damage for 20 seconds.

Examples from the global client:

Ad
Ad
  • Keen Strike: hits up to four enemies and restores MP
  • Leaping Slam: leaps up to 20 meters to the target
  • Mocking Blade: knocks the enemy down for three seconds
  • Aerial Snare: suspends the enemy in the air, available from level 12
  • Ruinous Blow: charges 7.5 meters and hits up to four enemies, then increases damage for 20 seconds, available from level 14
  • Defiance: breaks you out of crowd-control effects, available from level 16
  • Lifestealing Blade (Stigma): AoE attack that restores ten percent of the damage as HP

In the rankings from October 6, the Gladiator is the safest pick for boss content. It has the most players in the Nightmare overall ranking, all nine of its top players had already unlocked the boss Fortress Guardian Notun, and it is one of the four classes that cleared stage 3 in Transcendence. That puts it in S on my tier list.

Good fit if you want to be right in the middle of the fight, enjoy combos, and prefer to stay self-sufficient while leveling.

Assassin: Burst Damage, Stealth, and PvP

The Assassin fights with two Daggers, is extremely mobile, and makes heavy use of stealth. It strikes from hiding, prefers attacking from behind, and disappears again before the enemy can react. That makes it the classic glass cannon: Hit the right timing and your opponent goes down; miss it and things can turn dangerous quickly. Even so, the Assassin still forgives some mistakes. It’s suitable for beginners, but getting maximum damage out of it takes more practice.

Ad

Examples from the Assassin’s kit:

  • Ambush: attack from stealth
  • Quick Slice: fast follow-up attack for combos
  • Evasion Stance: stance focused on evasion
  • Smoke Bomb: lets you disengage and reposition
  • Shadowstep: mobility skill

In the rankings from October 6, the Assassin is near the top almost everywhere: Five Assassins were in the top 26 of the Nightmare overall ranking, it shared the second fastest Ascension Trial time with the Sorcerer, and it tied with the Sorcerer for the best score in the Arena of Cooperation. In my tier list, it sits in A.

Good fit if you enjoy duels and PvP and like fast, highly mobile combat.

Ranged Classes in AION 2: Ranger, Sorcerer, and Spiritmaster

Ranger: Beginner-Friendly Ranged DPS

The Ranger fights from range with a Bow. Its combos are simple and straightforward, making it the easiest entry point into ranged combat. Traps keep enemies at a distance, while mobility helps you stay out of melee range.

Examples from the Ranger’s kit:

  • Snipe: powerful opening shot
  • Rapid Fire: sustained fire against a single target
  • Arrow Storm: AoE damage
  • Ensnaring Trap: trap that immobilizes enemies
  • Deadshot: precise combo finisher

In the rankings from October 6, the Ranger is still struggling: Three Rangers were in the top 26 of the Nightmare overall ranking, none made the top 17 of the Transcendence overall ranking, and it had the lowest best score in both arenas. That puts it in B on my tier list.

Ad

Good fit if you want to fight from a safe distance and are looking for a ranged class that’s quick to learn.

Sorcerer: AoE Damage and Crowd Control

The Sorcerer casts spells with a Spellbook and combines two elements. Fire delivers damage and burn effects, while ice slows, roots, and freezes enemies. This lets the class wipe out entire groups while keeping dangerous opponents at a distance. For emergencies, it also has a protective barrier.

Examples from the Sorcerer’s kit:

  • Firebomb: fire attack that inflicts burn
  • Firestorm: fire-based AoE damage
  • Blaze: powerful single-target spell
  • Ice Chain: slows and freezes enemies
  • Steel Barrier: protective barrier
  • Hibernation (Stigma): the Sorcerer freezes itself and recovers while protected

The downside is low defense. If you pay attention to positioning and keep enemies away with ice, however, you get one of the strongest damage classes in return.

In the rankings from October 6, the Sorcerer shows two sides: A Sorcerer was at the very top of the Abyss, and the class had the best score in both arenas, tied with the Assassin in the Arena of Cooperation. In Nightmare, however, only one of the nine best Sorcerers had unlocked the boss Fortress Guardian Notun. That puts it in B on my tier list.

Good fit if you want lots of AoE damage and enjoy controlling the battlefield.

Spiritmaster: Summoner, Solo Class, and Crowd Control

I played the Spiritmaster to level 30 during the test. It fights with an Orb and summons elemental spirits, each with its own role. On top of that, the class uses curses, damage-over-time effects, and crowd control such as Fear and seals.

Examples from the global client:

  • Summon: Fire Spirit: AoE damage against up to four enemies
  • Summon: Water Spirit: deals damage and can restore MP
  • Summon: Wind Spirit: deals damage and restores HP
  • Summon: Earth Spirit: draws enemy attention
  • Summon: Ancient Spirit: deals AoE damage for 30 seconds
  • Jointstrike: Curse: deals damage and applies a curse that weakens enemies
  • Soul’s Cry: inflicts Fear on enemies
  • Command: Proxy (Stigma): your spirit shares incoming damage with you

In my combat analysis from the test, 38 percent of my damage came from Combustion and 22 percent from the Fire Spirit. That gives you a good idea of how much work the spirit does in the background while you cast your own spells.

My impression: The Spiritmaster is a lot of fun, but it takes some practice. You’re not only watching your own character, but also your spirit and which one is best for the current situation. In the rankings from October 6, a Spiritmaster held second place in the Abyss, but across the board the class rarely makes it to the top. In my tier list, it sits in B, but I see it somewhere between upper B and lower A.

Good fit if you enjoy pet classes, like crowd control, and spend a lot of time playing solo.

Support Classes in AION 2: Cleric and Chanter

Cleric: Healer, Resurrection, and High Group Demand

The Cleric is AION 2’s healer and the only class capable of resurrecting fallen party members. It heals individual targets and the entire group, protects allies with barriers, and weaves attacks between heals to restore MP. Thanks to self-healing, it’s also very durable when playing solo and deals enough damage for comfortable leveling.

Examples from the Cleric’s kit:

  • Healing Light: direct healing
  • Light of Regeneration: healing over time
  • Radiant Recovery: another healing skill
  • Judgment Thunder: wind-based AoE damage
  • Earth’s Retribution: attack chain that restores MP
  • Summon Resurrection: resurrects fallen party members

In the rankings from October 6, the Cleric is the strongest class in Transcendence: It holds the best record there and six of the top 17 places in the overall ranking. It had the second best score in the Arena of Solitude, but no Cleric made the top 26 of the Abyss overall ranking. In my tier list, it sits in A.

Good fit if you want to be in demand for groups, find dungeon parties quickly, and would rather save your teammates than top the damage meter.

Chanter: Hybrid Support, Buffs, and Melee Combat

The Chanter is a hybrid class. It fights in melee with a Staff, provides healing on the side, and strengthens allies with Mantras that continuously boost stats such as Attack or speed. It’s neither the best healer nor the best damage dealer, but it fits into almost any group and performs well solo, too.

Examples from the Chanter’s kit:

  • Onslaught: opens combat with physical damage
  • Resonance Crush: Staff combo
  • Healing Touch: single-target healing
  • Recuperation: heals both yourself and others
  • Undefeated Mantra: party-strengthening Mantra
  • Barrier Spell: protective spell

In the rankings from October 6, the Chanter dominates two rankings like no other class: It holds eleven of the top 17 places and the fastest time in the Ascension Trial, and ten of the top 26 places in the Abyss. That puts it in S on my tier list.

Good fit if you don’t want to commit to a single role and would rather make your whole party stronger than be the center of attention yourself.

Which Classes Are Needed in AION 2 Dungeons?

Expeditions support groups of up to five players. A typical setup looks like this:

  • one tank, usually a Templar, with Gladiator as an alternative
  • one Cleric as the healer
  • one Chanter for buffs and additional healing
  • two DPS classes of your choice

That makes tank and healer the roles almost every group is looking for. According to the skill description, the Gladiator’s Experienced Counterstrike and the Templar’s Fury do not stack, so bringing both classes apparently provides no additional benefit from those damage buffs.

AION 2 Tier List: Which Class Is the Strongest?

On October 6, one day after release, I went through all six in-game rankings on my server, Ereshkigal, and built an AION 2 tier list from them. In short:

  • S: Gladiator and Chanter. Gladiators lead Nightmare, Chanters dominate the Ascension Trial and the Abyss.
  • A: Templar, Assassin and Cleric. They show up in most overall rankings, and the Cleric is the strongest class in Transcendence.
  • B: Spiritmaster, Ranger and Sorcerer. They have individual top results, but rarely appear in the overall rankings.

This is a snapshot from the first days after release. Other servers may look different, and the values shift every day. The rankings also only show who is ahead right now, not how a class will feel to you.

Which AION 2 Class Has the Highest DPS?

The rankings don’t show damage numbers directly. The closest thing is Nightmare, a boss challenge with its own ranking: On October 6, seven Gladiators, five Assassins and four Templars were in the top 26 of the overall ranking, so melee classes are currently progressing much faster there. In the Ascension Trial, where your clear time counts, the Chanter had the fastest run at 2:17 minutes, followed by the Assassin and the Sorcerer at 2:32 each.

Our advice: Pick the class whose combat style you enjoy. Balance changes regularly, so your preferred playstyle matters more than a temporary tier position.

Mastery and Stigma: How Your Class Progresses

You’ll find your abilities in the Skills window (K). It has two tabs: Mastery and Stigma.

  • Mastery is your class’s general skill tree. New skills unlock as your character levels up, for example at levels 5, 7, 8, 10, 12, and 14 for the Gladiator in the test. You use Skill Points to increase their levels
  • Stigma consists of additional class-specific skills. You unlock them at level 22 through the quest The One Who Hears the Voice and later improve them with Stigma Shards from the Abyss Shop.

Our tip: Put your first Skill Points into the basic attacks bound to your left and right mouse buttons. You use them constantly, so every point invested there pays off in every fight. You can earn additional Skill Points through items such as Wisdom Stones from Sealed Dungeons.

AION 2 also has three skill presets that you can switch between with a keyboard shortcut. For example, create one setup for leveling and another for bosses.

Can You Change Classes in AION 2?

There is no free class-change option for your character. NC has not confirmed whether or when such a system will come to the global version; reports about one currently come from the community. For now, plan as though your class choice is permanent.

In Korea, the Brawler has been added as a ninth class and fights with Gauntlets. It isn’t part of the global launch, where NC has confirmed eight classes. Whether or when the Brawler will follow remains open. The global version is behind Korea in terms of content and is catching up step by step.

Which AION 2 Class Should You Choose?

If you still can’t decide, use your preferred role as the deciding factor: Templar for maximum survivability, Ranger for straightforward ranged combat, Gladiator for melee sustain and combos, Assassin for stealth and PvP burst, Sorcerer for AoE magic, Spiritmaster for pets and crowd control, Cleric for healing, and Chanter for hybrid support.

All eight launch classes can become strong characters with the right gear and practice. The most important choice is finding the combat style you actually enjoy playing.
